Specialized Bioinformatics and Data Management in Medical Libraries (October 4, 2024)

In this 1 hour webinar, guest speakers discuss the development of specialized bioinformatics and data management services in medical libraries.

Friday, October 4, 2-3pm ET | 1-2pm CT | 12-1pm MT | 11am-12pm PT

Dr. Ansuman Chattopadhyay, University of Pittsburgh

Dr. Chattopadhyay initially trained as a biochemist and molecular biologist before joining the Health Sciences Library System at the University of Pittsburgh to establish the Molecular Biology Information Service (MBIS) in 2002. Under his leadership, the MBIS has evolved into a premier institutional resource providing comprehensive bioinformatics and data science support.

In this panel presentation, Dr. Chattopadhyay will outline the evolution of the Molecular Biology Information Service at the University of Pittsburgh over the past two decades and discuss it's impact on supporting biomedical research at the university, demonstrating the valuable role HSLS plays in bioinformatics and data management.

Maze Ndukum, Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri

Maze Ndukum is one of the Senior Support Scientists in Bernard Becker Medical Library at Washington University in St. Louis School of Medicine. Maze manages licensing and training services for some popular software tools used in bioinformatics and biomedical informatics research. She also provides research computing services including educational efforts to address the need for basic UNIX, R and Python programming skills and access to shared high performance computing resources at WashU School of Medicine.

Bernard Becker Medical Library provides a variety of services including specialized resources, training and guidance to support researchers at Washington University in St Louis School of Medicine.  The growing emphasis on transdisciplinary research and the use of technology to integrate genomic data and a variety of health care information revealed an increasing need for bioinformatics, and biomedical informatics research support services.  To address this need, Becker Library provides training and consultation services that introduce researchers to informatics concepts and tools. These efforts reduce barriers, increase accessibility to essential resources, and prepares researchers for ongoing learning, and to accomplish their academic, and research goals.

Manuel de la Cruz Gutierrez, University of Pennsylvania

Manuel is the Director of the Holman Biotech Commons, the main biomedical library of the University of Pennsylvania. Originally from Mexico, he earned a BS in Physics from Universidad de Guadalajara, a PhD in Optics from University of Rochester, and a master’s in library science from Texas Woman’s University.

The Holman Biotech Commons serves the University of Pennsylvania Health System (Penn Medicine), The Perelman School of Medicine, and the School of Nursing. Manuel will present to you on the bioinformatics, data management, and data visualization services we provide to our communities, and the impact they have on Penn’s teaching, research, learning activities, and clinical practice.
