Palmetto Connect: Fostering Digital Inclusion in Rural South Carolina

Palmetto Care Connections’ Digital Inclusion Program, Palmetto Connect, helps close the digital divide ­for residents in rural and underserved areas of­ South Carolina by increasing internet access, providing digital devices, training people in digital literacy, and connecting individuals to quality-of­-lif­e resources such as telehealth through digital inclusion.

Hear how this program has impacted 17 South Carolina counties from Kathy G. Schwarting, chief executive officer of Palmetto Care Connections. She will discuss how the program developed, its successes, and lessons learned.

Speaker Bio

Kathy G. Schwarting, MHA serves as the Chief Executive Officer of Palmetto Care Connections, a non-profit telehealth network for SC that was founded in 2010.  PCC primarily focuses on improving access to care for rural/underserved populations through the use of telehealth, broadband and telehealth. Kathy has 28 years of experience in rural health care working with various types of providers to improve the overall health care delivery systems.  She passionately serves as an advocate for rural/underserved communities as she works to close the digital and health equity divide that impacts so many families.

Objectives:
  • Discuss virtual telehealth access centers such as libraries and their potential impact for health equity in rural communities.
  • Review best practices developed by a successful digital literacy training program.
  • Understand the role of digital inclusion in healthcare.
