Launching Bioinformatics Programs with Limited Resources (November 1, 2024)

Learn how librarians from University of Maryland, University of Pennsylvania and University of California, Berkeley built bioinformatics programs on limited resources.

Friday, November 1, 2-3pm ET | 1-2pm CT | 12-1pm MT | 11am-12pm PT

Amy Yarnell, University of Maryland

Amy Yarnell is the Head of Data and Bioinformation Services in the Health Sciences and Human Services Library at the University of Maryland, Baltimore.

In this talk, Amy will describe the development of my library’s Center for Data and Bioinformation Services, initially anchored by a bioinformatics specialist and herself, a data services librarian. She’ll discuss how, following the specialist’s departure, she focused on enhancing her own bioinformatics expertise through free educational resources, such as the NLM Bioinformatics and Biology Essentials for Librarians course. She will also highlight how the library leveraged campus-wide connections and existing resources to sustain and expand their services.

Neetu Rajpal, University of Pennsylvania

Neetu Rajpal is the Bioinformatics Librarian at the University of Pennsylvania with a PhD in Biology and several years of experience as a Lab scientist.

Neetu will talk about several Bioinformatic workshops they conduct for the Penn students/postdocs and the resources the library brings to Penn.

Elliott Smith, University of California, Berkeley

Elliott Smith is the Biology & Bioinformatics Librarian at the University of California Berkeley, and a 2015 graduate of the NNLM Training Office’s bioinformatics course for librarians.

As the sole bioinformatics librarian on their campus, and with many other responsibilities in addition, Elliot has found it important to make use of existing resources and build collaborative relationships. In this session, Elliot will discuss creating workshops with content drawn from NCBI training materials, using common tools such as LibGuides to provide on-demand support, and identifying instructional opportunities to increase impact across campus.
