The Addict's Wake: Virtual Film Screening & Panel Discussion Webinar

The Network of the National Library of Medicine (NNLM) has partnered with Glory Girl Productions to present the film, Addict’s Wake. The movie shares stories of substance use disorder and treatment told from the survivor’s perspective. Following a week of virtual film screenings beginning September 19th at 8am CT and ending September 26th at 12pm CT, a panel discussion including the film’s producer, Lisa Hall, Dr. William Cooke, a community physician and author of Canary in the Coal Mine, and Dr. Lynn Anne Witty will present a one-hour webinar discussion. They will share their experiences and knowledge for recognizing, diagnosing, and supporting persons with substance use disorders while advocating for advances in prevention and recovery awareness and information for the broad impact of substance-use primarily in small and rural communities. The program also will raise awareness of the National Library of Medicine (NLM), the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and SAMSHA information resources.

Guest Speakers: 

Dr. William Cooke
Dr. Cooke graduated with honors from IU School of Medicine and is a Fellow of the American Academy of Family Medicine and the American Society of Addiction Medicine. His national recognition includes being the Physician of the Year for the American Academy of Family Physicians, Doc Hollywood by the Indiana Rural Health Association, the Ryan White Distinguished Leadership Award, and the IU Bicentennial Medallion. 

He is the founder and medical director for Foundations Family Medicine, which is now a division of Well Care Community Health Centers. Dr. Cooke believes that everyone deserves equal access to hope, health, and opportunity. He explores this topic in his book called Canary in the Coal Mine through the lens of the historic 2015 Scott County HIV outbreak. 

Lisa Hall
Lisa is a graduate of the Indiana University Kelly School of Business. In 2016, she returned to school to get her Masters from Moody Bible Institute. Lisa has been a marketer of products, ideas and business initiatives for most of her adult life.  She has extensive experience in non-profit leadership and fundraising.  She has made deep connections in Brown County and participates in programs for women in incarceration and addiction recovery. 

Lisa conceived the concept for The Addict’s Wake documentary to encourage meaningful dialogue regarding the stigma and shame of addiction and deliver a message of hope to all those affected. The film premiered at the Heartland International Film Festival, and went on to Sedona International Film Festival, the Louisville International Film Festival, Pittsburgh, Vero Beach and Hoosier Fest winning several awards for Best Documentary along the way. For her efforts in fostering community conversations, Lisa is a recipient of the Distinguished Hoosier Award by Governor Eric J. Holcomb. She was also presented with the Recovery Ally of the year award in 2022 by Recover Out Loud.

Dr. Lynn Witty
Lynn A Witty, MD, is a retired pulmonary/critical care physician. She earned her medical degree from Indiana University School of Medicine and specialty training at Duke University Medical Center. During her career, she practiced medicine at a large community hospital in Muncie and  was an associate director for the Internal Medicine Residency program for many years. A significant illness caused retirement of her active medical practice, but after 10 years opened the opportunity to educate and interact with the community as an Adjunct Clinical Assistant Professor at the Indiana University School of Medicine-Muncie campus focusing on community-based research projects on health behaviors and outcomes. She also assists as Outreach Director of a free medical support clinic (Healthy Lifestyle Clinic) at the College of Health at Ball State University focusing on community health outreach across several counties. She is an active member of the Indiana State Medical Society serving on their Social Determinants of Health Committee.

Dr. Witty is a mental health and addiction consultant for the Delaware County Sheriff’s Department, as well as a previous consulting role with the Delaware County Commissioners for development of a 30-local day Addiction Treatment and Rehabilitation Facility  She is a coordinator in Crisis Intervention Training (CIT) and certified specialist in Sequential Intercept Mapping (SIM) for the state of Indiana. Her work developing, and implementing, a restorative, rather than punitive, alternative to suspension vaping cessation program in local middle and high schools has successfully been in place for over a year with very positive progress.

Objectives:
  1. Expand understanding of the emotional, physical and psychological side of persons experiencing Substance Use Disorders as well as psychosocial trauma on family relationships and communities.
  2. Increase awareness of harm reduction and prevention resources for substance use disorder.
  3. Make substance use disorder health information available from NIH, NLM, and SAMSHA.
