Beyond an Apple a Day: Providing Consumer Health Information at Your Library

This 4-week, 4 credit-hour self-paced online class covers the health information seeking behavior of consumers and the role of the librarian in the provision of health information for the public. Learn about the evolution of consumer health, health literacy and the e-patient, and expand your knowledge of top consumer health websites. We will discuss creative ideas for health information outreach in libraries, and wrap up by exploring effective marketing approaches and developing an elevator speech. Expect to spend at least 4 hours working on this class.

Caring for the Mind: Providing Mental Health Information At Your Library

Responding to questions involving topics on mental health is challenging even for the most experienced librarian. In Caring for the Mind, participants will learn how to effectively provide mental health information at their libraries. Participants will learn about the best electronic resources to consult as well as ways to improve their print collections. Best approaches for handling interactions with emotional patrons will also be discussed. Other topics covered include: bibliotherapy; assessment/testing; and the future of mental health.

ClinicalTrials.gov is the openly available federal registry and results database of publicly and privately funded clinical studies conducted in the United States and around the world. This 1-hour webinar explores the significance of ClinicalTrials.gov, why it exists, how to search and interpret results, and ways health sciences librarians can advocate to clinical researchers about the importance of complying with the results submission requirements mandated by federal law.

Learn about NLM resources that provide drug and chemical information for consumers and healthcare professionals, from interactions to adverse effects to clinical trial results. Your progression through this course can be tailored to your learning needs. Complete all 3 sections for an in-depth introduction to NLM drug and chemical information resources, or complete 1 or 2 of the sections for your specific population or commonly received questions.
