The Network of the National Library of Medicine (NNLM) Region 5, under cooperative agreement with the U.S. National Library of Medicine (NLM), announces the availability of funding through Professional Development Awards to increase knowledge, skills and competencies of NNLM network members on areas related to NLM priorities.

Network member organizations in Region 5 are eligible to apply. Only one award per Network member organization will be made during the current grant year. Awards will be available on an ongoing basis until funds are depleted. Payment will be made to the applicant’s host institution.

To receive funding, applicant’s institution must invoice the University of Washington (UW) no later than March 17, 2023. In order to invoice the UW, the institution must be registered as a UW supplier (for information on registering, see UW Supplier Registration.

Region 2 Professional Development Awards (Y2) $1,750

The purpose of the Professional Development Award is to strengthen the professional knowledge and experience of individual network members in data science or health information access/delivery and to build professional capacity in support of the goals of the NNLM.

Region 2 Exhibit Award $2,000

The Exhibit Award provides funding for exhibits at state and/or local meetings of health professionals, information professionals and health consumers. It provides an opportunity to promote NLM products, Region 2 programs or Region 2 member libraries to target populations. Funding covers registration and booth fees, travel and per diems, communication costs, and equipment rental if needed and associated costs for the exhibit.

The Expert Speaker Award funds an expert speaker to train staff or present at a conference to increase the use of NLM resources, keep current on topics related to NLM priorities, and build health information capacity for our network members.

Emerging Leader Award $4,000

The purpose of the Emerging Leader Award is to motivate and prepare a librarian for a position of leadership in an academic health sciences library. With oversight from the NNLM Region 3 Directors’ Advisory Board, the awarded librarian is paired with a director who will serve as their mentor.

Program Improvement Awards 2022-2023 $4,500

The purpose of this funding is to support short-term projects that involve program improvement to advance access to health information resources. Projects should be in support of the NLM 2017-2027 Strategic Plan.

Projects should be in support of the NLM 2017-2027 Strategic Plan and should focus on addressing the digital divide by improving community access to the internet and providing health literacy skills training or education required to find and interpret biomedical or health information.

The award’s primary aim is to focus on projects that stimulate innovations in biomedical knowledge or data science, information, or research services. The programs are intended to help a variety of users, with a focus on minority and other underrepresented populations and the health professionals who serve them, make the most effective use of information and decision-support resources that hold the promise of promoting healthy behaviors, preventing costly and debilitating illness, and improving health outcomes when disease occurs.
