Supporting Open Science: Tools and Trends

This 4-hour on-demand class provides an overview of open science and several tools for conducting and supporting open research. Learn about open science definitions and practices and how the federal funders are requiring more open sharing of data. You will also be introduced to the 5 R's of open research: Repeatability, Replicability, Reproducibility, Reusability, and Readability. You will explore free, open tools for practicing and promoting open science and open research.

This is an on-demand class. All the lessons are open and available to work through at your own pace and on your own schedule. You will engage with the course through learning materials, including readings, videos and knowledge checks. This course is designed as a standalone learning experience, you will not receive instructor feedback on your work.

Objectives:
  1. Define open science and its foundational elements
  2. Explain the key benefits and barriers of open data, open access, and open code
  3. Articulate how open science supports research integrity and reproducibility
  4. Describe available tools and resources for reproducible research and open science
