Customizing Bioinformatics Support for Diverse Communities (November 15, 2024)

This class is no longer accepting registrations

Librarians from University of Florida, University of California, Berkeley, and Johns Hopkins University discuss different ways they teach bioinformatics to their community.

Friday, November 15, 2-3pm ET | 1-2pm CT | 12-1pm MT | 11am-12pm PT

Aida Miró-Herrans, University of Florida

Aida Miró-Herrans has been the bioinformatics librarian at the University of Florida for the past 3 years. With a background in genomics, she provides instruction, consultations, and collaborations in genomics and bioinformatics research.

The bioinformatics librarian at the University of Florida uses different approaches to support the diverse campus community she serves. This presentation will discuss different methods she has used to assess campus-wide service needs and how she engages in inclusive teaching practices to accommodate different demographic needs.

Elliott Smith, University of California, Berkeley

Elliott Smith is the Biology & Bioinformatics Librarian at the University of California Berkeley, and a 2015 graduate of the NNLM Training Office’s bioinformatics course for librarians.

Students (both undergraduate and graduate) and researchers in a broad range of fields need an understanding of bioinformatics concepts, tools and techniques. And students and researchers using NCBI’s suite of bioinformatics databases and analysis tools need an understanding of best practices in data management, reproducibility and sharing. In this session Elliott will discuss how these two key areas provide opportunities for outreach and instruction aimed at diverse communities.

Rob Wright, Johns Hopkins University

Rob Wright has been the basic science informationist at the Welch Medical Library since 2012.  He has supported bioinformatics research through workshops, online learning modules, LibGuides, and resource acquisition.

Bioinformatics support at the Welch Medical Library has had a strong instructional component, with targeted outreach to graduate students.  This instruction focuses on expert searching skills and includes a series of workshops on databases from NCBI and other genomics gateways and a collection of accompanying LibGuides.  This presentation will provide details about these modes of instruction, describe strategies for outreach to graduate students, and present metrics for tracking instructional impact.
