'Stop the Bleed' Training for Rural Georgia Communities

Uncontrolled major bleeding is one of the leading causes of preventable death in trauma care (Bedri et al., 2021). Studies have shown that hemorrhage-controlled training, such as the nationally recognized Stop the Bleed® campaign, can be vital for training laypersons in life-saving hemorrhage-control techniques (Pellegrino et al., 2020; Jones et al., 2020), especially in rural areas where the delay in receiving medical aid from medical personnel may take longer than in urban areas (Bedri et al., 2021; Jones et al., 2020). Public libraries, as free and accessible centers of community engagement and education, are logical partners in improving population health through education and training (Whiteman, et al., 2018). Working with the Georgia Trauma Commission in conjunction with the Stop the Bleed (STB) program, community members from six rural counties in Georgia will receive bleeding control training. The Georgia Trauma Commission will provide Stop the Bleed trainers and the project librarians will work with the trainers and the public libraries in these rural areas to aid with scheduling training and promotion to the public. The project librarians will also provide Network of the National Library of Medicine (NNLM) and National Library of Medicine (NLM) resource training at these events, which will include discussing medlineplus.gov and NLM disaster topics and disaster preparedness information. The education will also include in the training information on the ready.gov website and how to build an emergency kit, and family communication plan.
