Medline Plus to Table

Indian River State College’s proposed project, Medline Plus to Table, offers three ways to engage participants in learning about health and nutrition using MedlinePlus. The first and most prominent component of this project is provided through targeted workshops to engage participants in hands-on learning. These workshops will address the challenge of navigating credible health information amidst the abundance of misinformation, especially in the realm of diet trends. Building on past success, the project aims to enhance participants' health literacy skills by teaching them to access health information from MedlinePlus and then use that information to create a meal. The unique combination of technology training and live cooking demonstrations has proven effective in previous sessions, drawing in participants and fostering their confidence in managing their health. By integrating MedlinePlus into the curriculum, the project seeks to further empower participants to make informed choices about their diet and overall wellness. The second component of this project is two lecture presentations focused on mental health and heart health. These presentations will highlight local solutions to large public health issues affecting St. Lucie County, FL and will offer the opportunity to expose an even larger number of individuals to MedlinePlus (with pre- and post-tabling and a short demonstration video during each event). The third component utilizes virtual versions of the popular workshops to expand access to those who are not able to travel to the library or who prefer a virtual learning environment. These live sessions will be recorded and made available to registrants. All three components of this project directly connect individuals to credible information and offers opportunities to interact with the information and receive guided assistance in increasing their personal health literacy skills.
