Library Student Outreach Award

Description of Award

This award promotes the value of outreach to library school students interested in health sciences librarianship.

Background/Purpose: 

The mission of the National Network of Libraries of Medicine (NNLM) is to advance the progress of medicine and improve the public health by providing all U.S. health professionals with equal access to biomedical information and improving the public's access to information to enable them to make informed decisions about their health.
 
The NNLM regional program is coordinated by the U.S. National Library of Medicine (NLM) and is carried out through a nationwide network of health science libraries and information centers. To accomplish the goals of the National Network of Libraries of Medicine, funding opportunities are offered by the NNLM SCR to provide resources to libraries, community based organizations, public health professionals, health educators, faith-based agencies, and other information partners throughout the South Central Region of the United States. States served by the NNLM SCR include Arkansas, Louisiana, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas.
 
The purpose of this award is to promote the value of outreach to library school students interested in health sciences librarianship.
 
The award provides funding for students to attend the South Central Chapter of the Medical Library Association Annual Conference in October, 2018 in San Antonio, Texas and participate in meetings, conference sessions and other activities designed for them to learn about the importance of health information outreach and services conducted by librarians in the South Central Region.

Eligibility: 

Library students residing in and currently attending an ALA-accredited Library or Information Sciences program located in the South Central Region (Arkansas, Louisiana, New Mexico, Oklahoma, and Texas) are eligible to apply.
 
Previous recipients and recipients of the 2018 Mayo Drake Student Scholarship Award are not eligible to apply.

Additional Funding Information: 

Two (2) awards. This award is intended to cover all expenses, up to $2,000.00 per award, related to conference attendance, including: registration, travel, lodging, and per diem. Funding will be cost reimbursement.

Evaluation of Proposal

The evaluation criteria are listed in the order of relative importance with points assigned for evaluation purposes. Applications will be scored against these criteria, so please be certain that all criteria have been addressed.  Maximum Points: 30
 
Criteria:

  • Applicant’s demonstrated interest and/or experience in health information outreach (10 points).
  • Applicant’s description of how this award could impact future career goals (10 points).
  • Strength of the applicant’s letter of recommendation. The letter of recommendation should describe why the applicant is well-suited for this award (5 points).
  • Inclusion of a well-defined plan to use the information gained from the conference with fellow library students, colleagues or by performing future outreach activities (5 points).

Reporting Requirements: 

During the Conference
During the conference, recipients are required to:

  • Attend the conference for at least three (3) days;
  • Attend the Library School Students/New Librarians session;
  • Attend as many of the scientific and poster sessions as possible;
  • Attend the NNLM SCR Outreach Advisory Committee meeting;
  • Staff the NNLM SCR exhibit booth for an assigned period.

After the Conference
Within 10 days of the last award activity, recipients are required to submit a report through the NNLM National Evaluation Office.

The report should cover a variety of topics including:

  • Scientific and poster sessions attended;
  • Lessons learned from the NNLM SCR Outreach Advisory Committee meeting;
  • Description of compelling outreach projects by librarians in the South Central Region;
  • Ideas for future outreach services

The awardee shall acknowledge the support of the NLM in all publications, presentations, and posters by stating:
