SCC Registration Now Open

The moment is here!  Registration for the SCC 2015 meeting in Little Rock is now open. You can now register for the meeting and great CE courses at:

The Program Committee has lined up fabulous speakers for the general sessions and the call for papers, posters, tech expos etc. are on the website. Exhibits will be Monday, October 5th and we hope you take this opportunity to talk with vendors about new services and get hands-on practice with new products.

We also have some unique events to look forward to.  During the Welcome Reception, you will have the opportunity to have photographic portraits taken for use in your professional activities. So, bring that favorite suit or jacket for this great photo op.  This year’s dine-arounds will have a unique spin by incorporating shopping or fun activities as part of the destination prior to dinner.  Finally, join us for a distinctive party at the River Market Pavilion and Junction Bridge for dinner and dancing Tuesday night.  Additional details about meeting information will be in the SCC Connections Newsletter, on the SCC Facebook page and on Daisy Dillo’s Twitter feed [@DaisyDilloSCC].

The Medical Librarian provides quality clinical and scholarly information services to meet the needs of the Ochsner medical staff, residents, students, and patients; assumes responsibility for implementing all duties of the medical library and its staff; handles information and reference services including online literature searches; coordinates document delivery services and interlibrary loan requests; oversees acquisition and management of electronic and print materials for circulating, reference, and special collections; manages the systems and technology for cataloging and accessing medical library materials and resources; and works closely with the other medical librarians, medical library staff, and the medical library Advisory Board to support the clinical information needs of the Ochsner system.


• Provides proactive, customer-oriented, Information search services to medical staff, employees, and patients
• Implements resource collection development that reflects Ochsner system and medical library goals and objectives
• Monitors and supports maintenance of technology and medical library website to facilitate access of electronic and online resources
• Collaborates with medical library staff, Advisory Board, and UGME/GME team to support information, research and education needs of the Ochsner system


Required Qualifications

• Master’s degree from a program accredited by the American Library Association or from a master’s level program in library and information studies accredited or recognized by the appropriate national body of another country
• Three or more years in a medical, corporate or special collections library with electronic health sciences information resources and services
• Previous experience should include conducting research information searches, managing library technology applications, general bibliographic instruction, Internet training, and familiarity with use of document management systems
• Self-directed, and possesses a high level of interpersonal skills
• Skills to complete work with little supervision, organize work, manage time, and meet deadlines, interact with other personnel in a professional manner, accept supervision when required, use appropriate references and other resources, use good judgment, and function calmly in pressure situations
• Exhibits problem-solving experience and the skills to communicate clearly, knowledgeably, and personably in both a team environment and individually

Preferred Qualifications

• Participation in the Medical Library Association
• Full or provisional membership in the Academy of Health Information Professionals and active
• Experience with ILLiad, SirsiDynix Symphony, and PubMed

Improved Changes to MedlinePlus Health Topics Pages

The subcategories on MedlinePlus’s Health Topics pages will show improved changes beginning tomorrow, June 23, 2015. MedlinePlus staff found through usability testing that the large number of current subcategories on these pages can be overwhelming and that some of the distinctions between subcategories might not be clear to users.

Another update will be to add a new subcategory for “Girls” and “Boys” under the Children categories.

Call for Applications: NLM/Association of Academic Health Sciences Libraries (AAHSL) Leadership Fellows Program, 2015-2016

The National Library of Medicine (NLM) is pleased to announce the 2015-2016 year of the leadership program jointly sponsored with the Association of Academic Health Sciences Libraries (AAHSL). The NLM/AAHSL Leadership Fellows Program is focused on preparing emerging leaders for the position of library director in academic health sciences libraries. The application deadline is July 20, 2015.

Program Overview

The one-year program design is multi-faceted: three in-person leadership institutes; attendance at an Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) annual meeting; a year-long fellow/mentor relationship; webinars and discussions on issues related to library leadership; and two weeks of site visit to the mentor’s home library.

The program is designed to:
•Introduce fellows to leadership theory and practical tools for implementing change at organizational and professional levels;
•Introduce fellows to critical issues facing academic health sciences libraries;
•Develop meaningful professional relationships between fellows and mentors that give fellows access to career guidance and support;
•Expose fellows to another academic health sciences library and its institutional leadership under the guidance of their mentors;
•Examine career development and provide models of directors to fellows;
•Create a cohort of leaders who will draw upon each other for support throughout their careers;
•Promote diversity in the leadership of the profession; and
•Offer recognition to emerging leaders and enhance the competitive standing of fellows as they pursue director positions.


The NLM/AAHSL Leadership Fellows Program is currently accepting applications and nominations for the July 20, 2015 deadline for potential fellows for the 2015-2016 experience. Candidates for fellow should have a strong interest in pursuing a directorship in academic health sciences libraries, as well as prior management experience. Applications are welcomed from professionals working in academic health sciences libraries, hospital libraries, or other library-related settings. Applications from qualified minority candidates are encouraged.

Directors with at least five years’ experience as director of an academic health sciences library should indicate preliminary interest in being matched as a mentor by contacting the AAHSL Future Leadership Committee by July 15th.

DOCLINE: Out of Office request

The NN/LM SCR DOCLINE office would like to remind you to complete the “Out of Office” form to prevent requests from routing to your library when it is closed. The instructions for completing the “Out of Office” request form are here:

You can set a future “Out of Office” date range for approval at any time. Nevertheless, it is HIGHLY recommended that you submit your request in advance to allow for review. Only one “Out of Office” request is permitted at a time. Also, you must enclose a resume date for approval. The “Out of Office” request will NOT be approved without it. If the date range request is more than two weeks consecutively, you must contact me personally for approval. If there is a situation such as staff shortage, library closing, renovation, etc. that would affect DOCLINE participation, the NN/LM SCR office needs to be notified.

As the date of your request approaches, please process as many requests as possible as “Filled” or “Not Filled.” On the last day of your library is active, receipt any new requests and process all outstanding requests as “Not Filled” so they will be routed to the next lender.

HIV/AIDS Community Information Outreach Projects 2015

The National Library of Medicine has announced its HIV/AIDS Community Information Outreach Projects initiative for 2015. NLM is seeking quotations from organizations and libraries to design and conduct projects to improve HIV/AIDS information access for patients and the affected community, in addition to their caregivers and the general public. Adequate health information is important in two ways: First, patients need the most current health information in order to make informed decisions. Secondly, health care providers/educators need access to the most current information to provide superior healthcare. The NLM is looking for creative and forward-thinking methods to disseminate information to populations that have a higher percentage of HIV/AIDS infections.

Projects must involve two or more information access categories:

  • Information retrieval;
  • Skills development;
  • Resource development and dissemination; and/or
  • Equipment Acquisition

Importance is placed on organizations or arrangements for developing these programs include:

  • Community-based organizations or patient advocacy groups providing HIV/AIDS related services to the affected community;
  • Public libraries serving communities in the provision of HIV/AIDS-related information and resources;
  • Health departments or local, municipal, or state agencies that work to improve public health;
  • Faith-based organizations that are providing HIV/AIDS-related services;
  • Multi-type consortia of the above-listed organizations that maybe in existence or formed specifically for this project.

Awards are offered up to 50,000.

NLM Funding Opportunity: Disaster Health Information Outreach and Collaboration Project 2015

The National Library of Medicine (NLM) announces a funding opportunity for small projects to improve access to disaster medicine and public health information for health care professionals, first responders and others that play a role in health-related disaster preparedness, response and recovery. NLM is soliciting proposals from partnerships in the U.S. that include at least one library and at least one organization that has disaster-related responsibilities, such as health departments, public safety departments, emergency management departments, pre-hospital and emergency medical services, fire/rescue, or other local, regional, or state agencies with disaster health responsibilities; hospitals; faith-based and voluntary organizations active in disaster; and others.

NLM Releases Beta Phase of MeSH RDF

The National Library of Medicine is pleased to announce a second beta release of MeSH® (Medical Subject Headings) RDF around June 18, 2015. The first beta release of MeSH RDF was published in November 2014 for selected institutions and organizations. Since that time, NLM Linked Data Infrastructure Working Group has been working with the selected institutions to test and evaluate MeSH RDF. Feedback from these and other interested parties have provided NLM with data on the potential use cases for MeSH RDF. This second beta release of MeSH RDF is designed to address some of our users’ needs and to improve the product. In addition to updating the MeSH RDF content to the 2015 version of MeSH, the new beta release includes a proof of concept for multi-lingual capability. Specific changes to the MeSH RDF schema, including changes to the URI structure, are documented in the release notes available at This second beta phase is now open to any interested parties and NLM is encouraging any potential users of MeSH RDF to test this new beta version and provide comments and feedback.

Bachelor’s degree required; master’s preferred. Seven years progressively responsible management experience required. Education beyond bachelor’s level may substitute for required experience on a year-for-year basis.

  • Ability to manage and plan complex multisite schedules of library operations
  • Language familiarity with at least two modern languages (as well as at least one classical language)
  • Familiarity with Texas state educational organizational, legislation, regulations, and operations

Health Literacy and Palliative Care Conference

Institute-of-MedicineRegistration is now open for The Institute of Medicine’s Roundtable on Health Literacy’s  July 9, 2015  Health Literacy and Palliative Care Conference.

The conference will feature presentations and discussions focused on the effect of low health literacy on all aspects of palliative care- medical care for serious illness focused on symptom management and improving the quality of life.  The conference can be attended in-person or via webcast and will run from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m EST.
