Use of Social Media Tools at FEMA

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has been engaging in the use of Web 2.0 tools and social media sites nationwide as part of its mission to prepare the nation for disasters. FEMA’s website now has a page devoted to detailing the agency’s use of social media to connect with the public. 

According to the website, “FEMA’s goals with social media are: to provide timely and accurate information related to disaster preparedness response and recovery; provide the public with another avenue for insight into the agency’s operations; and engage in what has already become a critical medium in today’s world of communications.”

As one portion of this effort, there are now a national, as well as regional, Twitter accounts. Of particular note, the NN/LM SCR corresponds exactly with FEMA Region VI (AR, LA, OK, TX, NM), accessed at .
