Express Outreach Award Recipients

The NN/LM SCR is pleased to announce the six recipients of the Express Outreach Award.

Institution: Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center – New Orleans LA
Project Title: Outreach to LSUHSC-NO School of Dentistry Clinic: Providing Quality Consumer Health Information to Dental Patients
Principal Investigator: Debbie Sibley
Project Description: This project will provide the patients of the LSUHSC-NO School of Dentistry clinic with quality consumer health information by making available the National Library of Medicine’s (NLM) consumer health databases and other reputable electronic sources. As a part of this project, the LSUHSC-NO librarians will recruit volunteers from full-time students and staff and train them on various NLM consumer health databases.

Institution: VA Medical Center – Alexandria LA
Project Title: TECHNOLOGY: Emerging Skills on the Cutting Edge of Healthcare – New to Our Libraries – Offered to satisfy Growing Yearnings
Principal Investigator: Lola Purvis
Project Description: This project is a collaborative effort between Veterans Integrated Service Network (VISN) 16 Library Staff and Central Louisiana Medical Library Consortium (CLMLC) with the dual purpose of learning emerging technologies that can be applied to the facilities and to strengthen and increase collaboration among both communities of libraries. The project will educate, train and mentor library staff through sessions at a face-to-face workshop.

Institution: Oklahoma State University Center for Health Sciences – Tulsa OK
Project Title: A World of Medical Information Access from the National Library of Medicine’s MedlinePlus and the American Indian Health Web site to the Okmulgee Indian Heath Center in Okmulgee, Oklahoma
Principal Investigators: Dohn Martin and Linda London
Project Description: The goal of this project is to advance patient and staff awareness of the National Library of Medicine’s MedlinePlus database and the American Indian Health Web site to advance the growth of the clinic through improved access to the health and biomedical literature.

Institution: UTSW Area Health Education Center – Dallas TX
Project Title: Ventanilla de Salud Online Health Resources Training Project
Principal Investigator: Lori Millner
Project Description: This project will provide one-on-one basic instruction and guidance on accessing the National Libraries of Medicine Spanish health resources (primarily MedlinePlus) for approximately 2,000 Spanish speaking adults over the course of one year.  Trainees will be individuals visiting the Ventanilla de Salud with health questions and Hispanics attending health fairs in the community.

Institution: TIRR Memorial Hermann Rehabilitation & Research, Houston TX
Project Title: Reaching out to People who have Suffered Catastrophic Injuries or Illness.
Principal Investigator: Brenda Eames
Project Description: This project will provide training for both health professionals and consumers. The classes will focus on locating on catastrophic injuries or illness information via the National Library of Medicine’s Electronic Health Resources.

Institution: University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio Libraries, San Antonio TX
Project Title: GetHIP – Preconference for Texas Library Association 2010
Principal Investigator: Julie Gaines
Project Description: This project will be a preconference  at the Texas Library Association (TLA) designed to increase awareness of health information resources especially relevant to students, teachers, and the health professionals who work with them.  The preconference will be an opportunity for librarians, teachers, school nurses, and others to raise their awareness of health information resources available from the National Library of Medicine and other
agencies and organizations.
