Network Members in the Spotlight!

We have been somewhat remiss in posting items about our Network members and their achievements, appointments and departures, so we had some catching up to do! In the future, we will publish quarterly updates regarding Network members in the news.

Naomi C. Broering, Dean of Libraries at Pacific College of Oriental Medicine, and MLA Past President, was recently appointed Secretary of the Friends of NLM (FNLM) Board of Directors. As Secretary, she is a member of the FNLM Executive Committee, which meets regularly to plan activities and special collaborative events with the NLM. Congratulations to Naomi!

Monica Garcia, Health and Life Sciences Librarian in the Research, Instruction, and Collection Services Division at the UCLA Biomedical Library, is leaving her position in August, 2012, to attend graduate studies at the Harvard University School of Public Health in the fall of 2012.

Emily Brennan, MLIS, who currently serves as Medical Librarian in the Educational & Research Services section at the University of Southern California (USC) Norris Medical Library, has accepted a new position at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC), in Charleston. Emily is also President of MLGSCA. Effective September 24, 2012, Emily will serve as Informationist/Research Librarian, a jointly funded and managed position between the MUSC Library and Department of Pediatrics. Emily began her career as an intern and Health Sciences Librarian at the UCLA Louise M. Darling Biomedical Library.

Mary White, Medical Librarian of the Drug Information Services Library at Kaiser Permanente Medical Offices in Downey, CA, will take over as President of MLGSCA effective September 12, 2012.

Angela Lee is the new Information Services and Instructional Librarian at the John A. Burns School of Medicine Health Sciences Library, University of Hawaii, replacing Annis Lee Adams. Angela was previously the Social Work Librarian at the University of Washington Health Sciences Library for over 16 years. Lee Adams is now the Reference & Electronic Resource Librarian at Golden Gate University Library in San Francisco.

Joy Graham, Director of the Barnett Briggss Medical Library at San Francisco General Hospital, retired in late June, 2012. For years, Joy set the direction for her library that serves clinicians, researchers, medical educators and students and also had a strong mission to provide consumer health information to the hospital’s diverse patient population and the general public. Joy received several NN/LM PSR outreach funding awards.

Irene Lovas was named Library Director at UCLA/Olive View Medical Center Library on a half-time basis in March, 2012. Irene was previously the Senior Medical Librarian at the Cedars-Sinai Medical Center Library, until her retirement on March 9, 2012. She follows the retirement of Marsha Kmec from Olive View, in December, 2011. Irene will continue serving as the MLGSCA Liaison to NN/LM PSR.

Caroline Marshall is now the Senior Medical Librarian at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center Library, replacing Irene Lovas. Caroline came from the Danbury Hospital Medical Library in Connecticut. Danbury Hospital is part of the Western Connecticut Health Care System, and is a university teaching hospital affiliated with Yale University School of Medicine, the University of Vermont Medical School, and Ross College of Medicine. She began the position at Cedars on June 18, 2012.

Carol Schechter is the new Library Manager at St. Jude Medical Center. She does double duty as she has been the Medical Librarian at Anaheim Regional Medical Center for seven years. Carol has worked in various types of libraries over a twenty-year span, but likes medical libraries the best. She enjoys the research aspect of the job and knowing that she is helping patients at these hospitals.

Kathleen Carlson joined the University of Arizona College Of Medicine (UACoM), Phoenix in 2012, as an Education/Associate Librarian. Prior to the UACoM-Phoenix position, Kathleen was the Health Sciences Librarian at Arizona State University, downtown Phoenix campus, for five years, and worked as a hospital librarian at John C. Lincoln Hospital, North Mountain, also in Phoenix.
