Professional Development Awards (Closed)

Description of Award

The mission of the National Network of Libraries of Medicine (NNLM) is to advance the progress of medicine and improve the public health by providing all U.S. health professionals with equal access to biomedical information and improving the public's access to information to enable them to make informed decisions about their health.


The purpose of this award is to support NNLM PSR Network member librarians, particularly hospital librarians, to develop their skills and knowledge in health information access and delivery.


Individuals affiliated with an NNLM PSR Network member institution and who are employed at least 50% time are eligible to apply. Network membership is free and open to institutions interested in providing health information. To apply for membership, visit the Join the Network page.

Potential Projects: 

Funding will be provided to individuals interested in attending professional seminars, conferences, workshops, and other educational opportunities in areas of health sciences librarianship or related disciplines. Funding will not be provided for personal memberships in organizations, nor for attending the Medical Library Association annual meeting.

The RML expects to fund three (3) professional development, conference and training activities up to $1,500 each.

Budget Guidelines

This award is intended to cover the costs of professional development courses/conferences such as registration fees and travel expenses (airfare, hotel, per diem, etc.). Funding will be provided on a cost reimbursement basis.

Evaluation of Proposal

Criteria for selection include: degree of course/conference relevance to areas of health science librarianship and health information access (10 points); applicant's expertise in subject area and/or interest in this area (10 points); value of the information gained through the activity to the applicant’s institution (10 points). Applications from hospital librarians will receive an additional 5 points.

After applications are submitted, they will be reviewed by RML staff. The proposals will be scored (0-35) based on the listed evaluation criteria in this CFA. Applications receiving a minimum score of 20 will be considered for funding, with the highest scoring proposals receiving priority as funding allows.

Reporting Requirements: 

Within 10 days of completion of the activity, recipients are required to submit an article for the NNLM Latitudes newsletter blog describing the event, benefits obtained, and plans for incorporating and/or disseminating new knowledge gained. In addition, recipients of professional development funding awards are expected to submit an NNLM form with an evaluation of the activity.  Visit the NNLM Evaluation Materials: Professional Development page for information.
