Introducing Health Professionals to NLM's Online Systems

  • This PubMed tutorial, for new and also experienced users of the system, teaches users how to understand PubMed's scope and content, to use Medical Subject Headings (MeSH), to build a search, to manage results and to save search strategies.
  • PubMed Quick Tours are brief animated tutorials with audio highlighting different features of PubMed. Most are 1 - 3 minutes long.
  • The PubMed Training Products Page provides access to PowerPoint prsesentations for trainers to use.
  •, a registry and results database of publicly and privately supported clinical studies of human participants conducted around the world, also provides tutorials and Quick Tours.

Consumer Health Classes for Public Libraries

  • Prescription for Success: Consumer Health on the Web. This hands-on introduction to consumer health information will cover the information-seeking behaviors of consumers, the basics of, DIRLINE, and other reliable web pages such as those from professional medical associations and advocacy groups. It will cover sites devoted to pharmaceutical information for consumers, drug-interaction databases and herbal information.
  • From Snake Oil to Penicillin: Evaluating Consumer Health Information on the Internet.This hands-on course will describe why it is important to evaluate websites. Participants will be given criteria for how to evaluate health information on the Internet.
  • PubMed for the Rest of Us: Searching the Medical Literature for the Non-Expert. This class covers basic searching; easy techniques for developing complex search strategies; PubMed's special features, such as Filters; the Journals Database; the Single Citation Matcher; and MyNCBI. It also covers how to obtain full-text copies of articles (3 MLA CE). The title of the PowerPoint can be changed and the class will work just as well for health professionals who are not very familiar with PubMed.
  • Beyond an Apple A Day: Providing Consumer Health Information in the Public Library. This hands-on class will cover the information seeking behaviors of consumers. It will also address the recommended core reference collection, as well as databases and newsletters/ periodicals. It will cover the reference interview, disclaimers, and privacy as well as networking with medical librarians. The class will introduce the students to the Medical Library Association and its local chapters. It will describe possible ways to market this service in a community.





Promoting Health Literacy with Free Information & Cool Tools from NLM
This three-part video training series is a collaboration between the Center for Health Literacy Promotion and NN/LM PNR. It's aimed at social and health services providers and programs with limited time and money for trainings and materials.

Health Literacy in Your Community
Developed by the NN/LM PNR. This presentation and facilitator's guide is designed for use in group/community training sessions. The materials cover the importance of health literacy, and provide an introduction to Medline Plus and NIH Senior Health, plus guidelines for choosing trusted web-based health information sources.

Connecting Youth to Quality Health Information
A Lesson Plan for High School Health and Fitness Education - Developed by the Center for Public Health Nutrition at the Unversity of Washington. This is a lesson plan to increase the capacity and capability of high school students to access and evaluate quality health information. This lesson also establishes MedlinePlus as a recognized resource for current and future health information needs.

Another resource from the Center for Public Health Nutrition at the University of Washington. This site will assist you in finding answers to student health questions. You can learn how to identify accurate and reliable health information using MedlinePlus and elsewhere on the internet.
