NTO Staff Bios
Jessi Van Der Volgen
My name is Jessi Van Der Volgen and I am the Assistant Director of the National Network of Libraries of Medicine Training Office, which is housed at the Spencer S. Eccles Health Sciences Library at the University of Utah. In 2012, I started working for what was then the NTC, as a backup trainer in the second year of my National Library of Medicine Associate Fellowship. I really enjoyed teaching both online and in-person and jumped at the chance to continue as a trainer for the NTC.
As a trainer and Assistant Director for the NTO, I help develop and teach online and in-person classes on PubMed, TOXNET, and other NLM resources. I will be working with my NNLM and NLM colleagues to help continue to bring you great training and professional development opportunities.
While in library school (University of Wisconsin – Madison), I worked at a very busy undergraduate library answering all kinds of interesting questions, and at the Ebling Library for the Health Sciences. I also had a project assistantship at the Limnology Library. I had to look up limnology before applying to the job — it’s the study of inland waters. With just two library school students running the library, I had a chance to do a great variety of work – organize and weed government documents, copy catalog new books, develop a class on copyright for faculty and graduate students, and even service a field station on Trout Lake in Northern Wisconsin.
Before becoming a librarian, I was a high school biology teacher at a small school in Beaverton, Oregon. I loved teaching freshman through seniors, and it was wonderfully rewarding to see them be excited by new concepts. If you teach or train, you know how great it is to witness those “a-ha!” moments.
I am enjoying getting to know Utah, which is a great place to be if you love the outdoors. In my off time, I like hiking, cross-country skiing, trying new restaurants, playing with my rascally dog, watching the Packers and rooting for the US Women’s National Soccer Team!
I firmly believe we all have something to learn from each other, so if you have feedback or ideas for making our classes or other materials better, I hope you will take a minute to let me know. I look forward to meeting you – either virtually or in-person!

Hi. My name is Rebecca Brown and I work for the National Network of Libraries of Medicine Training Office as a Training Development Specialist.
I received my M.L.S. from Texas Woman’s University in 2006. Before grad school, I held several non-professional jobs in public libraries in the Kansas City area. During grad school I worked in the Copyright and Document Delivery Department of the Archie Dykes Health Sciences Library at the University of Kansas Medical Center (KUMC).
After graduation, my first professional job as a librarian was with the National Network of Libraries of Medicine – MidContinental Region (NNLM-MCR) as the Kansas and Technology Coordinator. As the Coordinator, I promoted and trained librarians and health professionals on resources from the U.S. National Library of Medicine. For the technology piece of my job I tested and provided training on digital tools such as RSS, social bookmarking and screen casting for their use in library settings.
Before going to grad school, when my kids were young and I was a stay-at-home mom, I started a small business called Moveable Feast. I cooked meals for delivery and catered in-home dining events. Later I returned to school and completed a Computer Network Administrator Certificate. The certificate gave me a solid background in software, web design and hardware, which propelled my next business, Menu News. Menu News was an email marketing company for local restaurants. I ate very well during those years.
My early undergraduate work was in French and Linguistics. Growing from that is an interest in literacy for non-native English speakers. I have been tutoring political refugees in English since 2009.
I love to cook (for other people). I’m a bird watcher and have participated in several Audubon Christmas Bird Counts.
I love teaching and have wanted to be a database trainer for years. I teach PubMed and the TOXNET suite of databases that cover toxicology, hazardous chemicals, environmental health, and toxic releases.

Hello world! My name is Molly Knapp and I am the newest Training Development Specialist at the National Network of Libraries of Medicine Training Office. Rest assured, I am no rookie. I’ve worked in academic health science libraries since 2002, specifically in positions that involve instruction, specialized search services, and of course, the occasional shushing.
11 things to know about me:
- I graduated in 2002 from the University of South Florida (Tampa, FL) with a Master of the Arts in Library and Information Science. I was in the first cohort to take an online class in my library school days! ::shakes cane::
- My undergraduate degree is in English and Russian from the University of Florida. Go Gators.
- I have worked for libraries at LSU Health Sciences Center – New Orleans (2002-2012) and Tulane University School of Medicine (2012-2016). As a student I worked at UF’s Smathers library & USF’s Tampa Campus library.
- I am a Distinguished Member of the Medical Library Association’s Academy of Health Information Professionals.
- I am a 2010 NLM Fellow in Medical Informatics at the Marine Biological Laboratory in Woods Hole, MA. (A free and amazing week long immersion program now held at a lovely resort near Athens, Georgia.)
- I currently live in Houston, Texas, spent a long time in New Orleans, & am a 6th generation Floridian by birth.
- I have 2 kids, 1 husband and an aging dog.
- I enjoy riding bikes, craft beer, losing at fantasy football, and nerdly activities such as gaming and fantasy/sf.
- My current favorite NLM/NCBI resource is ToxInvaders, an iOS app that teaches environmental health and chemistry to middle school students.
- My research interests include mobile apps, the ACRL Framework for Information Literacy, and emerging technologies.

Hello, my name is Sarah Dickey, and I’m the Program Manager for the National Training Office. I joined the staff in June 2013. As the program manager I handle the day to day activities of the NTO including course registration, behind the scenes course administration, troubleshooting, and general administrative duties. If you ever have questions or concerns, you know who to call!
In 2009 I graduated Summa Cum Laude from Utah Valley University with my BS degree in Digital Media with an emphasis in project management and web development. After college I worked as a substitute teacher, printing services technician, elementary school media assistant, and most recently administrative assistant at a local engineering firm. I am so happy to have made my way to the University of Utah working with the fine people of the Eccles Health Sciences Library.
I was married in 2010, and live in the suburbs of Salt Lake City with my husband, and two kids. In my free time I love hiking, exercising, touring the national parks, (we have five here in Utah), spending time with my family, and crafting. I have lived in Utah my entire life and I can’t really imagine living anywhere else.

Hello, I am Matt Steadman, I began working with NNLM in July of 2011 and am the web software developer for NTO, and also work with the MidContinental Region. I also work on our videos, graphics and course logos, ensuring compliance with federal regulations and best practices for the website, and whatever other similar tasks come up. I received my Bachelor of Science in 2012 in Computer Engineering from the University of Utah. Throughout my education I applied my skills in various capacities, I have worked as a web developer, business analyst, data analyst, graphic artist, and as an assembler of electronics. Although until I found myself working with NNLM, I didn’t even know that Medical Librarians existed. Since then I have learned a lot about the role that Medical librarians play and am very honored to assist both my coworkers and the many librarians that we train.
In Fall 2014 I founded the Video Game Heritage Institute, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to the preservation and recognition of the inherent art of the medium as well as the impact that video games have had, and the role they continue to play in our culture. I am currently pursuing my MBA at the University of Utah in the Professional MBA program, and expect to graduate in Summer of 2017.
I live with my wife of 10 years Emily and our 2 year-old daughter Madeline in Taylorsville, Utah.
Remzi Kizilboga is a doctoral candidate in Instructional Systems Technology at Indiana University Bloomington. He is originally from Elazig, Turkey. He held his bachelor's and master's degrees in Computer Education and Instructional Technology in Turkey. He has been living in Bloomington since 2011.
While studying for his master’s in Turkey, Remzi worked as an information technology teacher in an elementary and middle school, which helped him to shape his interest in the instructional use of technology. He also taught the Using Computers in Education course to pre-service teachers at Indiana University. Before starting to work as an Instructional Technologist/Curriculum Specialist at the National Network of Libraries at Medicine at the University of Utah, he worked as an Instructional Design Consultant in the Office of Online Education at Indiana University.
Remzi is interested in technology integration in educational settings align with instructional design principles. He loves to create efficient and effective instructional materials to engage learners and enhance learning. He is currently working on his dissertation, which is about the secondary teachers' instructional design activities in a Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) environment, and plans to graduate in May 2018.
