Data Science Supporting Biomedical Research

The New England Region Research & Data Management Program provides resources and professional development opportunities for Research & Data Management and data science librarians who are supporting biomedical research. Resources such as the Research & Data Management Portal for Librarians provides web based tools and information to help information professionals effectively participate in networked science by collocating resources on education, outreach, and collaboration, as well as current practices and Research & Data Management news. Professional Development opportunities such as the Research & Data Management Symposium, RDM Roundtables and Science Boot Camp provide opportunities for in-person formal learning modes and networking.


eScience Symposium

The University of Massachusetts and New England Area Librarian e-Science Symposium encourages New England region libraries to collaborate and support e-science initiatives at their institutions. Featuring presentations by nationally recognized leaders in the e-Science arena, the symposium is an educational opportunity for librarians to learn about e-Science resources and current initiatives. The symposium also provides a forum where librarians can discuss new library roles for engaging research communities and supporting networked science. Materials from the 2009-2018 Symposiums can be found in eScholarship @UMMS.

RDM Roundtables

The Research Data Management Roundtables are a series of events targeting librarians who are actively engaged in research data management to create a Community of Practice (COP). At the roundtable librarians will discuss with their colleagues their own experiences and learn from each other. Each roundtable will have a pre-set topic(s) for discussion. The focus is on practical details and learning from each other's experiences.

Roundtable events are planned also which will span a wider array of librarian engagement, including offerings for those just beginning to work in research data management services to create a Community of Interest (COI) where attendees can begin to acquire both skills and network with colleagues on the same learning pathway.


Professional Development Workshops

  • ACRL Research Data Management Roadshow Building Your Research Data Management Toolkit: Integrating RDM into Your Liaison Work
  • Data Tools Forum: half day forum featured a brief introduction on the integration of data science tools in the research landscape and overview presentations of three open-source tools commonly used in working with data extraction, wrangling, analysis, and presentation: OpenRefine, RStudio, and Jupyter. Speakers included Chris Erdmann, Tom Morris, Daina Bouquin, Zachary Painter, and Matt Burton.
  • Teaching Research Data Management with NECDMC: full day workshop demonstrating how the New England Collaborative Data Management Curriculum can be used to teach faculty and students best practices for research data management. 
  • Embedded with the Scientists: Librarians' Roles in the Research Process: one day workshop explored new roles librarians are forging in biomedical research projects. 
  • Metadata Day: full day workshop will featured metadata expert Diane Hillmann, who presented an overview of metadata, its purpose in supporting data discovery, and metadata schema. The afternoon featured four "Metadata in Action" breakout sessions during which local metadata librarians from featured four afternoon breakout sessions where librarians from Tufts, Harvard, and MBLWHOI presented projects and answered questions.
  • Scientific Data Management: day-long workshop provided an overview of eScience and its implications for research, background on the life cycle of data, and how librarians can insert themselves into the process of managing, preserving and making research data findable and accessible.
  • Stem Cell Workshop: introduced the area of Stem Cell Research to New England science librarians.
