New Outreach Coordinator

Hello to all of our members and the rest of the region. I am the new Outreach Coordinator for the NN/LM New England Region. I have a B.S. from UMass Amherst and will be completing my MLIS from The University of Alabama next semester. I have twelve years of marketing and sales experience, including in the health care field. My most recent employment has been at the Lamar Soutter Library at the University of Massachusetts Medical School assisting with project coordination, data research, and analysis related to the Public Health Information Access project.

Over the next few months, I will be planning some travel in the region to meet our Network members. I was fortunate to have started in my new role prior to NAHSL and was able to attend NAHSL 2012 in Vermont . I’m looking forward to meeting everyone that was unable to be there or that I didn’t get the opportunity to talk to.

New IOM Report on Assessing the Value of Community Health Interventions

For those of you interested in community health outreach and prevention education, there is a new report out by the Institute of Medicine proposing a new framework for assessing the value of community-based health interventions. The report titled, An Integrated Framework for Assessing the Value of Community-Based Prevention is freely downloadable at .

In the report, the authors define what criteria an assessment framework should contain to determine its value in predicting or demonstrating future improved health outcomes. As the authors did not discover any existing framework that contained all their criteria, they developed their own framework.

The essential elements of an assessment framework recommended in the report are ones that:
• Account for benefits and harms in physical and mental health, community well-being, and community process
• Consider the cost of resources used compared to the benefits to be achieved

The new framework also suggested what could be measured to predict/determine future community health outcomes. They include quality-adjusted life years or health-adjusted life expectancy, community well-being indicators, and community process indicators, along with monetary savings.

As communities may be very different from one another with different health issues, this newly proposed framework can be used to evaluate any type of community health intervention. Lastly, the authors stress transparency of the process and results are essential to ensure the health interventions truly reflect the health needs of the community and lead to sound decision-making and expenditures of funds.

MedlinePlus Showcased at Language of TB Conference

Mark Goldstein was invited to co-present at the “Language of TB” Conference on November 5th, that took place at the Hoagland-Pincus Center in Shrewsbury, MA.  The conference was hosted by Health Resources in Action (HRiA), a nonprofit public health organization dedicated to promoting individual and community health through prevention, health promotion, policy, and support of medical research.

As part of the program’s objective to help community health workers (CHWs) and public health nurses find quality health information resources on the internet, Mark focused attention on MedlinePlus and MedlinePlus Mobile, offering tips on accessing specific information related to TB (tuberculosis) on NLM’s consumer health information resource.


Hospital Library at SVHC Receives Go-Ahead

Gary Strubel, the hospital librarian at Southwestern Vermont Health Care (SVHC) in Bennington, VT, has recently received the “seal of approval” from SVHC’s Executive Management Team to go ahead with transitioning the hospital library function to a Knowledge Services Department.  Gary will spend the next several months working out  details with Operations and Human Resources.

As part of the NER’s 5-year Strategic KM Initiative, Gary’s effort represents one of several KM pilot projects in the region, and the only project that has proceeded without NER funding.

The expectation from the pilot projects is that in the near future several notable KM transitioning  “models” will emerge.
