Health Literacy Community of Interest
From Caroline Marshall, Health Literacy COI leader
First of all let me introduce myself to those who don’t know me. I am a Health Sciences Librarian at Danbury Hospital, CT and for the last 4 years I have been promoting Health Literacy within the hospital to residents, physicians, and nursing staff. It hasn’t all been plain sailing as many of you know from your own work, but our passion keeps us moving forward. Health Literacy does seem to be taking hold here at Western Connecticut Health Network ( Danbury Hospital) with our new Primary Care Residency Program but there is still so much to do.
I will be presenting highlights from the recent Institute for Healthcare Advancement Conference at California our webinar on July 13th 2pm. Some great topics were covered, including Teaching Health Literacy to Health Care Professionals, Empowering Patients: A Health Literacy Workshop to Engage the Community and Creating and Sustaining a Plain Language Initiative.
It was also a great opportunity to hear what others are doing throughout the country to support the goals of the National Action Plan to Improve Health Literacy The main takeaway is that collaboration is key, no one group can go it alone. Once our listserv is up and running I can share some of these stories with you and we can all share what we are doing or would like to do to bridge the health literacy gap.
