Student Newspaper Digitization Project

The Schaffer Library of Health Sciences at Albany Medical College, in partnership with the Albany Medical Center (AMC) Archives, proposes a project aimed at digitizing, interpreting, and providing online access for the Albany Medical College student newspaper collection. The collection contains three former student newspapers, The Albany Medical Nexus, 1978-1999, The Differential, 2002-2003, and Student Perspectives, 2004-2005. The project goals are: 1) Digitize 2.4 cubic feet of the student newspaper collection through the purchase of a new scanner and software; 2) Provide online access by making the student newspaper collection available through the Albany Medical College?s website with accompanying metadata. The focus of the main newspaper, The Albany Medical Nexus, was ?to report on local college news, state and national legislation affecting medicine, significant research advances and the opinions of members of the Albany Medical College Community.? By digitizing the content, we will be facilitating access to the historically important cultural information contained in the student newspaper collection. At the end of this project, the scanner will continue to provide benefits to the targeted audience through not only the preservation of AMC cultural history but it will also give the archivist the ability to scan items for the general public. Additionally, the scanner will allow the library and archives to continue their collaborative relationship to create web based exhibits.
