Developing a Plan to Ensure Preservation and Access to Historical Materials in the MAR

As librarians, curators and archivists are pressured more and more to ?go digital?, they are faced with tough decisions regarding what they can and should keep in print ? and for how long. These decisions should not be made independently; rather they must keep in mind the uniqueness and historical value of the materials within the larger context of community. For the community of historical and archival collections in the NNLM/MAR, we are proposing a one-day conference to address the issues of preservation, retention and access to historical materials in our region. Two experts in these areas, Constance Malpas of OCLC Research and Alice Schreyer of the University of Chicago, have agreed to speak and facilitate discussions which will lead to the creation of (1) a cooperative plan to ensure preservation and access to historical materials in MAR and (2) a working group to oversee the implementation of this plan.
