Empowering the non-English Speaking Health Care Consumer

The large number of articles on patient-physician communication found in both medical journals and popular magazines reflects the importance of this interaction in the delivery of appropriate health care. If the English speaking patient has difficulty communicating, imagine the difficulties encountered by the patient with limited English proficiency; such patients are dependent upon family, friends and translation services. The goal of this project is the acquisition of a basic health care vocabulary that will help these patients improve their ability to communicate directly with their health care providers.
