Reference/Instruction Librarian – Gwynedd-Mercy College, Gwynedd Valley, PA

Position Type: Part-Time, 20 hours/week


Provides reference services and instruction to students, faculty and others.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

Provides reference assistance to students, faculty, staff and other users of the College library.
In consultation with the Library Director and the Reference/Instruction Librarian, develops and presents instruction on the use of the library to classes and individuals, which includes preparation of training materials, handouts, and computer-based instruction materials that assist in instruction and usage.
Participates in collection development activities.
Hours include nights and weekends.
Serves as librarian in charge of the facility in the absence of the library director as assigned.

Master of Library Science or equivalent degree from an institution of higher learning accredited by the American Library Association; training and experience in providing bibliographic and library instruction and reference services.

Technical Skills

Experience using online and Internet resources in the reference setting.

Language Skills

Fluent English speaking, reading and writing skills. Ability to read, analyze and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions.

Reasoning Ability

Ability to apply principles of logical thinking to a wide range of practical problems. Ability to quickly assess a situation and select the appropriate response.

Interpersonal Skills

Ability to interact effectively and professionally with others. Ability to work independently and as part of a team. Ability to work with and provide library service to people with diverse language and cultural backgrounds.

Schedule Requirements

Availability to work evening and weekend hours.
