Data Management Planning Tool (DMPTool)

Definition

The DMPTool is an open-source tool to help researchers write grant-specific, and non-grant funded data management plans (DMPs). The platform provides researchers with templates and step-by-step instructions and guidance for DMPs. The DMPTool also has direct links to funder websites, help text for answering questions, and data management best practices resources. Institutional partners can add organization-specific resources, services, and guidance to help fulfill the data management requirements for a grant.

Within the platform, contributors can be added and assigned specific data management roles in a project (e.g., Principal Investigator (PI), Data Manager, project administrator. etc.) In addition, collaborators can be added to review, read, edit, and administer a DMP and provide question-by-question feedback on the plan.

Examples

Public DMPs are plans created using the DMPTool and shared publicly by their owners. Note: They are not vetted for quality, completeness, or adherence to funder guidelines.

Tools

DMPTool can be used to create data management plans that meet institutional and funder requirements.

Further Resources

This DMPTool “Data management general guidance” provides information on common data-related questions found in DMPs.
