Riots and Flash Mobs

Friday, July 8th, 2011

Libraries should develop procedure for what to if a large group of people gather in or near the library.  With social media, mobs can form very quickly.  Stories abound about flash mobs in a public place simultaneously dancing to a popular song.  Most often, these incidents are innocent and the atmosphere is friendly.  However, other flash mobs have resulted in vandalism.  In extreme cases, riots can occur, such as the one that developed in Vancouver following their hockey team’s loss in Game 7 of the Stanley Cup.  Below is an article from the Vancouver Sun about the psychology of a riot.   Talk to public safety personnel in your area for recommendations on how to handle these kinds of incidents.  Please share what you learn by commenting on this post.
