PubMed Essentials

PubMed is a free resource that provides access to MEDLINE, the National Library of Medicine database of citations and abstracts in the fields of medicine, nursing, dentistry, veterinary medicine, health care systems, and preclinical sciences.

If you’re new to PubMed or just want a refresher this online class is designed for you. The class is made up of 11 short modules that include 2 and 3-minute videos and accompanying exercises so you can explore PubMed at your own pace in Moodle, a course management system.
 

Objectives: 

Students will be able to define the scope of PubMed.
Students will be able to build a basic PubMed subject search.
Students will be able to find a known citation by citation elements, author name or journal
Students will be able to obtain the full text of an article using filters.
Students will be able to obtain the full text by identifying their local library and library subscriptions.
Students will be able to locate and apply the systematic review filter.
Students will be able to explain the scope of the PubMed systematic review filter.
Students will be able to apply the Clinical Queries Clinical Study Category to narrow a search trelevant records on treatment.
Students will be able to locate the MeSH database.
Students will be able to explain MeSH automatic explosion.
Students will be able to identify all terms automatically included in a search when mapped to MeSH.
Students will be able to locate the link to My NCBI and create an account.
Students will be able to locate the “send-to” Collection menu after running a PubMed search.
Students will be able to send selected items to a new Collection.
Students will be able to describe how to make a collection public.
Students will be able to run a search, create an email alert and save a search.
