Telling Your Story Through the Press
Recording of the session can be viewed below.
Despite an increasingly fractured and shrinking news media, there remains no better way to reach a large audience than by getting mainstream media coverage for your organization or program. So-called “earned media” is viewed as more credible than advertising or self-promotional efforts, and receiving coverage in news outlets can help increase awareness of your cause, gain the interest of potential donors or influence elected officials who often control your budgets.
In this webinar, you’ll learn about the benefits of cooperating with the news media, how to pitch your story to reporters, what type of information and elements are most likely to result in positive coverage and how to maintain control of your messages. Participants will also learn how to prepare for different types of interviews, how to avoid common interview mistakes and see examples of both media successes and interview trainwrecks.
Speaker Bio: Jeff Carlton is the Director of Media Relations at UNT Health Science Center in Fort Worth, where he serves as the primary media contact, spokesman and public information officer. He began his journalism career as a sports reporter for The Albuquerque Tribune and spent five years covering legal affairs and law enforcement for the Dallas bureau of The Associated Press, where he won a Scripps Howard National Journalism Award for team coverage of breaking news. Jeff has a bachelor’s of science in journalism from Northwestern University.
