A Rendez-vous with Data
Three librarians will share their experiences developing and providing unique data services in academic medical settings.
Erin Foster @ Indiana University School of Medicine, Ruth Lilly Medical Library
With data-focused positions continuing to emerge in academic medical libraries, there’s a greater push to identify how the library fits into the data services landscape of universities at large. How does one get started in this process? Erin will highlight some of the opportunities, challenges, and partnerships involved in kickstarting a library data services program.
Ariel Deardorff @ UCSF Library:
In the last year UCSF Library has expanded their data services to include instruction in R, Python, and SQL. Ariel will discuss how the Library has leveraged campus partnerships and worked with organizations like Software Carpentry to offer programming workshops, meetups, and drop-in sessions.
Kevin Read @ NYU Health Sciences Library:
Graduate students in the basic sciences require the knowledge and skills to conduct literature searches, manage, share and visualize their research data, understand the emerging landscape of collaborative science, and comply with new research funding agency and publisher requirements. At the request of the Vice Dean for Science and the Director of the graduate student program, the NYU Health Sciences Library Data Services Team developed and taught a one-credit, required course for the basic science graduate program to address these needs.
