PNR Rendezvous: Make it Work—Managing Your Solo or Small Hospital Library

Whether you work by yourself or with a small staff, the nitty-gritty of successfully delivering your services can be challenging. Join two successful solos as they discuss the importance of building partnerships throughout their organization, staying visible and valuable, all at the best possible price.

Presenters: Louise McLaughlin, M.S.L.S., MPS is the Information Specialist at Woman’s Hospital in Baton Rouge, LA since 2003, Louise McLaughlin has translated her skills as former Public Librarian, Information Broker, and Reference Librarian, to successfully managing a hospital library. In addition to maintaining basic services, Louise realigned budgetary goals, developed an archives digitization project, tailored a rounding program to the hospital needs, and began an outreach program to other departments. Louise facilitates a monthly online Solo Chat where librarians share successes and experiences and explore new ideas. She has contributed to National Network, Journal of Hospital Librarianship, and was an invited contributor to NLM Director Dr. Patti Brennan’s Musings on the Mezzanine. As a solo librarian, Louise believes that learning and sharing what we know never ends and librarians always need to be preparing for the future.

Helen-Ann Brown Epstein, MLS, AHIP, FMLA, Except for being the Online Services Coordinator for the NNLM and training for a commercial vendor, Helen-Ann has been a hospital librarian with an ambitious clinical rounding schedule. Her career began has a Reference Librarian at Walter Reed Army Medical Center and has taken her to Richmond, Denver, Omaha, Philadelphia, and New York City. Currently she is the solo Informationist at Virtua Health in Mt Laurel, New Jersey. She has been honored with a Virtua SuperStar Caring People Award and a Magnet exemplar. Helen-Ann holds an MLS from the University of Maryland and a MS from the University of Pennsylvania. She is the Associate Editor of the Journal of Hospital Librarianship and is honored to be a Fellow of the Medical Library Association.
