A Nursing Liaison's Role in Evidence-Based Practice

Description: Evidence-based practice (EBP) is a key part of healthcare today and is of growing importance to nursing practice. The increasing interest in EBP provides librarians with an avenue for partnering with nursing colleagues and demonstrating the value librarians can bring to an organization. This webinar will situate evidence-based practice in modern healthcare and describe how it has become central to nursing practice. The webinar will focus on identifying key roles and strategies librarians can employ to support nurses in applying evidence-based practice to patient care.

Class Objectives
1. Understand the place of evidence-based practice in healthcare today and why it has become central to nursing practice.
2. Gain an understanding of the difference between EBP, Performance Improvement and Research
3. Identify opportunities librarians can take advantage of to support the evidence-based practices of nurses.

Presenter Bio: Roy Brown is a Research and Education Librarian at the Tompkins-McCaw Library for the Health Sciences at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU). He serves as liaison to the nurses of VCU Health and the VCU School of Nursing (SON). As part of this work, Roy serves on VCU Health and SON evidence-based practice (EBP) and research committees. He also supports the VCU Health Nurse Residency and the Nursing Interns and Scholars Programs by working closely with administrators overseeing the program as well as with participants. Roy has presented on his work with these groups, including successful EBP tools and strategies he utilizes, at the American Nurse Credentialing Center (ANCC) Magnet Conference, the ANCC Pathways to Excellence Conference, and other state and regional nursing conferences.

Class Overview

SEAside is an alternate webinar series from the Network of the National Library of Medicine, Southeastern/Atlantic Region (NNLM SEA) to promote educational opportunities that occur infrequently and are in addition to the Beyond the SEA webinar series. Speakers cover different topics of interest to health science librarians, health care practitioners, librarians, and other health focused groups in the region. Topics include new and updated National Library of Medicine (NLM) resources, RML Awardee presentations on their research and outreach programs, Disaster Resources, Electronic Health Records, and many others related to health science and health care. All sessions are online webinars using WebEx, which allows for live phone conversation and online chat. SEAside webinars are held infrequently and are based on the availability of specific speakers who may not be able to present during the Beyond the SEA webinar series. Sessions are generally held at 2PM (ET) and last an hour. Sessions are recorded, closed captioned, and made available for later viewing.
