NNLM Reading Club Presents... The Digital Doctor in the Age of COVID-19

Join Dr. Robert Wachter, author of The Digital Doctor: Hope, Hype, and Harm at the Dawn of Medicine’s Computer Age, as he discusses how digital health and health technology have evolved since his book was published in 2015 and what patients need to know in light of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Chair of the Department of Medicine at University of California, San Francisco, and one of the nation’s most influential physician-executives, Dr. Wachter will give a short presentation, read briefly from his book and then answer your questions. Submit a question for him to answer during the live session!

The talk highlights a New York Times best-seller selected by the NNLM Reading Club for June as the club focuses on digital health literacy. The New York Journal of Books called it “quite simply an excellent book written with intelligence and balance for both the general public and health care practitioners.”

Presenter:
Robert M. Wachter, M.D., is Professor and Chair of the Department of Medicine at the University of California, San Francisco. Dr. Wachter is the author of approximately 300 articles and 6 books. A patient safety advocate, Dr. Wachter has written two books on this topic, including Understanding Patient Safety, now in its third edition. He coined the term “hospitalist” in 1996 and is often considered the “father” of the hospitalist field. He is past president of the Society of Hospital Medicine and past chair of the American Board of Internal Medicine. In 2004, he received the John M. Eisenberg Award, the nation’s top honor in patient safety. In 2015, Modern Healthcare magazine ranked him as the most influential physician-executive in the U.S.. He has served on the healthcare advisory boards of several companies, including Google and Teladoc. In 2016, he chaired a blue ribbon commission advising England’s National Health Service on its digital strategy. He currently serves as the chair of the International Advisory Board for The Healthcare Improvement Studies (THIS) Institute at the University of Cambridge whose goal is to improve the evidence base for improving healthcare.
