Data Science 101: An Introduction for Librarians

Summary: The term “big data” is often tossed around in conversations about science, but what does it really mean? This webinar will explain what big data is and provide an introduction to the data science techniques that can be used to analyze it. We’ll talk about how data science can help researchers find meaning in data and discuss some of the common techniques and tools used in a variety of different research areas.

Presenter Bio: Lisa Federer currently serves as research data informationist at the National Institutes of Health Library, where she provides training and support in the management, organization, sharing, and reuse of biomedical research data. She is the author of several peer-reviewed articles and the editor of the Medical Library Association Guide to Data Management for Librarians. She holds a master’s of library and information science from the University of California–Los Angeles and graduate certificates in data science (Georgetown University) and data visualization (New York University), and she is a doctoral student at the University of Maryland.

Upon completion of the Beyond the SEA Webinar, each participant will receive 1.0 hour of continuing education credit awarded by the Medical Library Association. Certificates will be available electronically following completion of the online survey supplied at the end of the webinar.
