Build a Better Class with Instructional Design
This class presents Instructional Design (ID) in the context of academic and health sciences librarianship and provides a hands-on opportunity to apply the principles of ID based on the ADDIE model in 7 online modules, including a "catch-up" week. This class utilizes a series of 5 videos to introduce each new ADDIE phase. After watching the video, students work through a lesson about that ADDIE phase, then complete and submit an activity worksheet. Each unit has a knowledge check to make sure that students understand the main points from the lesson.
This is a self-paced class, open during the dates posted on this page. Students will be able to access and work on the class material 24/7 throughout the 8-week period. Instructors will reply to questions and comments and provide feedback (via Moodle, a course management system) for the required assignments.

Instructional design is a systematic approach to creating lessons that meet learner needs. There are many models of instructional design, and this class will focus on one of the most well-known, ADDIE. ADDIE stands for: 1) Analysis 2) Design 3) Development 4) Implementation and 5) Evaluation.
This course is useful for those who want to improve their instruction whether you are teaching patrons to use technology, creating online information literacy modules, instructing a large class, or helping students one-on-one. This course does not intend to make you an expert instructional designer – there are certificates and degrees for that. The class includes a worksheet for each section that provides an opportunity to apply what you are learning and get feedback from the instructors and fellow students.
