Affordable Care Act and Minority Health Webinar

National Conference of State Legislatures: Webinar. Affordable Care Act and Minority Health Webinar.

The Affordable Care Act (ACA) contains many provisions that potentially affect the health of racial and ethnic minorities. The law reorganized the federal infrastructure charged with reducing health disparities, required changes in data collection on minority health status, encouraged increased cultural competency for providers, strengthened community health centers, made numerous changes to the insurance market and bolstered prevention, wellness and home visiting programs.

Given that people of color are disproportionately uninsured, another key goal of the ACA, to reduce the number of uninsured, could potentially reduce health disparities for people of color. Both the insurance marketplaces (also known as exchanges) and the optional state Medicaid expansions create new coverage options beginning Jan. 1, 2014. This webinar will examine how the provisions of the ACA will affect health outcomes for people of color in the United States.
