Statement of Educational Objectives
Primary Objectives: Increase the physician's awareness of MedlinePlus™, ClinicalTrials.gov, NLM Gateway, PHpartners.org and PubMed resources; increase the physician's ability to use these resources with patients.
By the end of the course, the attendee will be able to:
MedlinePlus
- Identify five kinds of resources that are on the site
- Explain the difference between MedlinePlus, MEDLINE, and PubMed
- List at least three guidelines used to select links for MedlinePlus to Web resources with health information
- Find information about a disease or condition
- Find drug and encyclopedia information on the site
- Link to pre-formulated searches of the MEDLINE database
- Find the link to a clinical trial for a disease or condition
ClinicalTrials.gov
- State the purpose of ClinicalTrials.gov
- Tell a patient how to find the contact person listed for a study
- State who is responsible for content on ClinicalTrials.gov
- Find resources that will help patients understand clinical trials
- Find studies being conducted for a particular disease or condition; using specific treatments; or in a particular geographic area
- Find trials by searching or browsing
- State the difference between a basic and focused search
PHpartners.org
- State the purpose of PHpartners.org
- Identify at least three federal agencies and other organizations participating in the Partners project
- Link to pre-formulated MEDLINE searches related to Healthy People 2010 focus areas
- Find links to statistical information sources and data sets on the site
- Find links to health promotion and health education resources on the site
- Find links to sources of information about grants and other funding opportunities for projects related to public health
- Find links to education and training opportunities targeting the public health workforce
