PubMed® Health developed further as a resource for clinical effectiveness research with its August and September 2011 releases. Growing from around 200 items based on systematic reviews to over 5,000, PubMed Health has also begun a collection focused on helping people understand systematic reviews and their results. PubMed Health goals are: helping users find the evidence that could answer their questions about effects of health care and helping them understand what they find. For more information see the full NLM Technical Bulletin article.

Recording of February 16, 2011 presentation
BeyondtheSEA: PubMed for Handhelds with Paul Fontelo
The National Library of Medicine has a free Web application, PubMed for Handhelds[link: http://pubmedhh.nlm.nih.gov/], designed for handheld devices to help healthcare professionals read journal abstracts, access ClinicalTrials.Gov orsearch PubMed in a variety of ways: directly or via a PICO interface. The PubMed search also allows restriction to Systematic Reviews or Clinical Queries. Join the staff of the Southeastern/Atlantic Region of the National Network of Libraries of Medicine and Paul Fontelo of NLM for a presentation and discussion of PubMed for Handhelds.
Paul Fontelo is a staff scientist research physician in the Office of High Performance Computing and Communications, Lister Hill National Center for Biomedical Communication (LHNCBC), National Library of Medicine. Since his first Palm III personal digital assistant (PDA) in 2001, he has developed resources for handheld and wireless mobile devices. Fontelo’s goal has always been to bring MEDLINE via the Internet through handheld devices to the point of care as a resource for clinical decision making. This was underscored in a recent presentation to the LHNCBC Board of Scientific Counselors,”Bringing the Medical Library Where Needed: at the Point of Care.” Throughout the continuous evolution of operating systems and mobile devices, he has kept resources relevant by opting for open source software, platform and operating system independence, and Internet standards. Fontelo has tested all types of wireless access (Bluetooth, infrared, Wi-Fi and cell phones) and mobile devices from PDAs to the “One-Laptop per Child” computer, netbooks, and smartphones. He is a board-certified pathologist with an master’s from Johns Hopkins University.

From the NLM Technical Bulletin:
By J. Shore, Index Section
Shore J. MEDLINE Character Set Expansion. NLM Tech Bull. 2010 Jul-Aug;(375):e13.
http://www.nlm.nih.gov/pubs/techbull/ja10/ja10_medline_char_set.html
Since the inception of MEDLINE, NLM has limited the characters used to those typed from a standard US keyboard and a small set of frequently used diacritics (see this character set at Limited MEDLINE/PubMed Character Set).
Starting in early September 2010, NLM will accept for newly created MEDLINE records any UTF-8 character in the Latin (Roman) and Greek scripts as well as mathematical and other symbols commonly found in biomedical literature. Other scripts such as Chinese, Japanese, or Korean are not supported (see MEDLINE/PubMed Character Set for the expanded character set).
The most notable difference is the addition of Greek characters to the database. Previously, NLM spelled out Greek letters, for example, replacing β (Unicode 03B2) with beta. PubMed users are now able to search for these characters either by copying and pasting the text from an online source or by spelling out the letter as they always have done. Both approaches retrieve the same set of citations.
NLM will continue to standardize some characters:
All instances that represent a Double Quote will be translated to the straight double quote ” (Unicode 0022).
All instances that represent a Single Quote (this includes prime and apostrophe) will be translated to the straight single quote ‘ (Unicode 0027).
Em Dash, En Dash, Hyphen, or Minus will be translated to the single dash – (Unicode 002D).
See Diacritics in PubMed Displays and Searching for additional information.

The National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) is currently developing a new site called PubMed Health, which is intended to focus on consumer-level, evidence-based health information. Though PubMed Health is still under development, NCBI has released some of its initial content, provided by the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP), to be searchable through search engines such as Google. NCBI is currently reviewing some development decisions for the PubMed Health site to determine how these particular pages are being used. Once the site is ready for production release, PubMed Health will have its own search function as well as links to other NLM online products. An NLM Technical Bulletin article about PubMed Health will be published once the site is ready to be launched.
PubMed Health does not replace MedlinePlus (http://medlineplus.gov/), NLM’s premier health Web site for patients and their families and friends. MedlinePlus continues to be expanded, including a full site redesign launched this July as well as a new mobile interface, MedlinePlus Mobile (http://m.medlineplus.gov/) that was released in January 2010. MedlinePlus provides reliable up-to-date health information about diseases, conditions, and wellness issues in language the public can understand.

Print and bring your workbook to class.
Due to the continuing rise in printing and shipping costs, the National Training Center and Clearinghouse (NTCC) will NO longer provide workbooks for class participants. It will be the responsibility of each registered class participant to produce and bring the various workbooks to the classes for which he/she is registered.
Participants may download and print out the workbooks from the NIH website. The PubMed® and NLM Gateway/ClnicalTrials.gov workbooks are available in two formats: Microsoft Word and PDF (Adobe Acrobat). The TOXNET® and Beyond workbook is available in one format: PDF (Adobe Acrobat). The Adobe Acrobat reader is freely available for download from Adobe’s website

The November 2009 issue of NCBI News, from the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI), is now available. The feature article is “New Discovery-oriented PubMed and NCBI Homepage.” It discusses the design and features of the new PubMed and NCBI homepages. It also provides information on searching the PubMed interface with tips on using advanced features.
For a detailed search and a useful demonstration of the new PubMed interface and features, see the annotated example “search for genome wide association studies for late-onset Alzheimer disease” at: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/bookshelf/br.fcgi?book=newsncbi&part=nov09_4
