The National Library of Medicine (NLM) Special Queries page now includes a link to a new subject page for veterinary and animal health literature. The Special Queries directory provides links to either special search interfaces, or pre-sets the Limit function of the standard PubMed interface to the selected subject or journal subset. Areas of coverage for veterinary and animal health include:

  • veterinary medicine
  • animal models
  • alternatives to animal testing
  • laboratory animals
  • animal welfare
  • animal hospitals
  • pets or companion animals
  • domestic and farm animals
  • wildlife
  • exotic animals
  • apiculture
  • aquaculture
  • general zoonoses
  • animal behavior and psychology
  • animal nutrition
  • animal diseases
  • animal toxicology and parasitology

The MEDLINE/PubMed Search and Veterinary Information Resources page offers a comprehensive PubMed search including subject terms and veterinary journal titles. The strategy uses MeSH headings to retrieve indexed citations, plus title words to obtain OLDMEDLINE and unindexed citations. Historical citations from PubMed Central may also be retrieved.

Use DOCLINE Hold While You Are Attending MLA

Thursday, May 17th, 2007

When you are going to be away from your library, you take certain steps to assure that your users are aware of your absence. You update your voicemail message and hopefully, you update you status in your DOCLINE account. When you plan to be away three or more working days, use the electronic DOCLINE Hold Request form to allow DOCLINE to not route requests to you when you are not there to handle them. Please complete the form several days in advance so the regional staff can get it keyed into the DOCLINE system.

While on hold Loansome Doc libraries, will not accept requests from registered users. If patrons have a secondary serving library selected in their account, the system will automatically choose that active DOCLINE library for their Loansome Doc request, till you come off of ‘hold’ status.

2007 Michael E. DeBakey Award Winner Announced

Wednesday, May 9th, 2007

Ada Seltzer, Director of the Rowland Medical Library at the University of Mississippi Medical Center, was awarded with the 2007 Michael E. DeBakey Library Services Outreach Award for Outstanding Service to Rural or Underserved Communities. Ada was recognized for her dedication to ensure that all Health Professionals and Consumers in the State of Mississippi have access to necessary quality health information, The award is given by the Friends of the National Library of Medicine Board of Directors.

Ada has had a long and distinguished career in outreach. In the early 1990’s, she established a model network to deliver health information electronically to rural health care providers Building on the success of this pilot project, she was the principal investigator of an NLM grant in 1994 to expand the Mississippi Health Sciences Information Network (MisHIN.) In its inception, MisHIN services included Internet connections and Web delivery of all information sources such as a statewide health sciences online union catalog, online membership directory, citation and full text CD-ROM databases, specialty discussion groups, CE calendar, and numerous related Web links for its members. Today the Network serves as the “state’s infrastructure for access and delivery of health sciences information to health care practitioners.

MisHIN is comprised of health sciences and academic libraries and other health agency information providers. Through electronic information, MisHIN enables its members across the state to link the newest medical information with clinical practice and thus enhances both the quality and cost effectiveness of health care delivery in Mississippi.” (See http://mishin.library.umc.edu/ ) Even with the introduction of a fee schedule in 2000, the Network has grown to 69 members and seeks to add new members as outreach efforts continue.
