Unraveling the Mystery of Genetics Information for Consumers
NN/LM SE/A Consumer Health Outreach Coordinator, Terri Ottosen, has written an article describing the development and content of a new class offering in the region on genetics information for consumers. It has been published in the Journal
of Consumer Health on the Internet, Vol. 11, Number 2, 2007, p.33-42. The title of the article is “Unraveling the Mystery of Genetics Information for Consumers.” The following is the abstract:
The Human Genome Project, a multibillion dollar research initiative, was designed to map and sequence the genes in the human genome. This goal has been realized, but the future data gathered will have implications for many generations to come. Consumers trying to make sense of the often complex issues surrounding genetic information need reliable resources to assist them in understanding and evaluating this information. Librarians familiar with and aware of these resources and issues can greatly assist consumers. This paper will discuss the content of new training for librarians and consumers, including Web resources for consumer genetics information.
The article also provides a list of resources for genetics information for consumers. The class, entitled, the ABCs of DNA: Unraveling the Mystery of Genetics Information for Consumers, is intended to assist librarians or consumers seeking to understand basic genetics concepts, vocabulary, counseling and conditions.
