As we enter the last year of our contract, we are announcing the final funding opportunities under this award.  All projects proposed for express awards must be completed by April 30, 2011.

The due date for applications is May 7, 2010, after final budget approval by the National Library of Medicine.  We anticipate July 1, 2010 start dates to allow time for application review, clarification, and agreement approval. Therefore, project scopes and work plans should cover no more than a 10 month period.

“Knowledge Services and the Role of Medical Libraries in Healthcare IT”

John D. Halamka, MD, MS, will give the 2010 Joseph Leiter NLM/MLA Lecture on Wednesday, May 26, at 2:00 pm at the Lister Hill Center Auditorium at the National Library of Medicine.

Dr, Halamka is the Chief Information Officer of Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and Chief Information Officer of Harvard Medical School. As Chief Information Officer of Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, he is responsible for all clinical, financial, administrative and academic information technology serving 3000 doctors, 14000 employees and two million patients.   As Chief Information Officer of Harvard Medical School, he oversees all educational, research and administrative computing for 18000 faculty and 3000 students.  He is also a practicing Emergency Physician.

In addition, Dr. Halamka participates on several state and national committees.  He serves as Chairman of the New England Healthcare Exchange Network (NEHEN), which oversees clinical and administrative data exchange in Massachusetts. Dr. Halamka is the current the Chair of the US Healthcare Information Technology Standards Panel (HITSP) and co-Chair of the HIT Standards Committee, with the goals of coordinating the process of electronic standards harmonization among stakeholders nationwide.

The Lecture will be recorded and broadcasted live on the Web to MLA members and the NIH community at http://videocast.nih.gov.   A coffee/tea reception sponsored by the Friends of the National Library of Medicine will follow the Lecture at the Lister Hill Center lobby.  Special NLM tours will be offered at 3 pm and 3:30 pm, starting in the NLM Visitor Center.

The Joseph Leiter NLM/MLA Lecture was established in 1983 to stimulate intellectual liaison between the Medical Library Association (MLA) and the National Library of Medicine. Leiter was a major contributor in cancer research at the National Cancer Institute and a leader at NLM as a champion of medical librarians and an informatics pioneer.

The NIH Gateway Center is accessed from NIH Gateway Drive and is near the exit of the Metro system’s Medical Center stop. All visitors are encouraged to use Metro or other public transportation if at all possible.

Based upon declining usage of the site over the last 2 weeks and departure of the USNS Comfort from the area, the EAI Activation Team with representations from NLM, publisher, and NN/LM has agreed to let the period of free access for Haiti expire after 8 weeks.   After the Haiti activation period expires, NLM will send out summary usage numbers of the EAI website to the RMLs.

NLM is interested in any feedback you have on EAI – on the project itself, the logistics, the communication, the web site, etc.  We would really like to hear feedback from libraries that deployed staff to Haiti or otherwise supported efforts there.

The Coalition for American Indians is able to extend our program for one more summer!  We will host our last group of high school students at Humboldt State University this July 12-24.  Thanks to all our efforts, last year’s camp resulted in four students desiring to apply and being accepted at Humboldt State University.

The program for Summer 2010 will have space for just 16 students (we had 40 last year and 120 applications!).  We hope to find those who are genuinely interested in exploring computing (Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Information Systems, Information Technology, GIS) at the college level.  The program will include instruction in problem solving, mathematical computations, and computer programming. Students live in campus housing and have a college student as a peer mentor. The mornings are used for class time and the afternoons and early evenings are used for fun projects. Field trips are being planned and we’d like to visit a local reservation or Native-owned business and see how technology is being used there to benefit the members.

Attached is this year’s flyer and application.  If you know any high school Sophomores or Juniors who would be interested in applying, please announce our program to them.  If a student is interested but does not currently meet the criteria, please have them address that issue in their personal statement.  The program dates are July 12-24, and we are again covering round trip travel, room and board and a stipend. The application deadline is SOON: April 2nd!

The National Library of Medicine (NLM) is pleased to announce the solicitation of quotations from organizations and libraries to design and conduct projects that will improve access to HIV/AIDS related health information for patients, the affected community, and their caregivers.

Projects must involve one or more of the following information access categories:

• Information retrieval;
• Skills development;
• State-of-the-art resources;
• Resource development; and/or
• Document Access.

Emphasis is placed upon the following types of organizations or arrangements for developing these programs:

• Community-based organizations (CBOs) or patient advocacy groups currently providing HIV/AIDS related serves to the affected community;
• Public libraries serving communities in the provision of HIV/AIDS-related information and resources;
• Health departments or other local, municipal, or state agencies working to improve public health;
• Faith-based organizations currently providing HIV/AIDS-related services; and/or
• Multi-type consortia of the above-listed organizations that may be in existence or formed specifically for this project.

Standard Awards are offered for up to $60,000; Express Awards are offered for up to $10,000.
