Year 05 Funding Almost Goneby Janice Kelly, executive director Since the start of the new contract year on May 1, the SE/A has been very busy funding projects and awards. The only funding that is still available are the exhibit, professional development (limited funds) and training awards. If additional funds are found, we may provide some additional electronic document delivery or professional development awards later this year. Below is the list of award and project recipients. Technology Awareness awards:
Professional Development Awards:
Electronic Document Delivery (EDD) awards:

Public Health Information and Data Tutorial
Public Health Information and Data Tutorial provides instruction for members of the public health workforce on issues related to information access and management. This tutorial is based on Public Health Information and Data: A Training Manual. There are no copyright restrictions on the contents of this tutorial or the training manual, and users are free to adapt or duplicate any portion.
This tutorial is designed for easy navigation to any module topic or subtopic. Although you can link to any page with just a click or two, it is recommended that you step through each module sequentially. The help page includes directions on how to navigate the tutorial.
The tutorial teaches identification of and links to web sites with public health news updates. Here are three of them:
Partners
in Information Access for the Public Health Workforce: News
Contains public health news, as well as a collection of links to other public health news sites, for a total of 39 links.
National
Library of Medicine:MedlinePlus®;
Offers the last 30 days of news from the New York Times Syndicate, Reuters Health Information and others.
The
Center for the Advancement of Health
Contains a news site funded by the John D. & Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation.
The contributors and authors of this tutorial's content represent city, county, state and federal agencies. They establish clear connections to recognized competencies in public health and provide examples representing much of the diversity inherent in the practice of public health. The learning objectives of the tutorial include building and using skills to:
- Stay informed of developments and events related to public health;
- Find reliable and authoritative consumer-oriented materials to support health education;
- Retrieve statistical information and access data sets relevant to public health; and
- Retrieve and evaluate information in support of evidence-based practice.
Librarians, run through the Public Health Information and Data Tutorial yourselves, advertise it and encourage staff with short blocks of time to do it one topic at a time over a month's span.

The Time Has Come the Walrus Said, to Speak of Many Things…
First, check your DOCLINE information and make sure it is up-to-date. It is easy to print a copy of the complete institutional record for your library in order to review it. Log in to DOCLINE, click on "Institutions", and then click on "Update [your LIBID]". Scroll down the page -- on the bottom left you will see a link "Print entire library record". Your borrowing partners will appreciate working with your most current information.
Here are some key items to check when reviewing your institution record (be sure to click on Save to keep your changes!):
-
"Address"
Add Internet addresses for your institution, library, OPAC, ILL, Loansome Doc®, and Consumer Health. -
"People"
Key in personnel changes, new people or changes of responsibility or title. -
"Services & Fees"
-
Review your Base Fees
-
Review "Surcharges," if any. The value should be the surcharge for the service – only the fee charged in addition to the base fee. To add a surcharge: select surcharge type, click "Add Surcharge," enter surcharge amount, and comment to explain service and/or fee.
-
For listing in MedlinePlus , check the box.

Review your "Services," making sure you checked the boxes describing the services you offer to affiliated personnel, unaffiliated health professionals, and the general public. Use the check boxes to indicate whether you charge for these services.

- Verify "Delivery Methods" and "Addresses." Double
check the delivery methods for sending and receiving. Your correct email

finished, click the
"Request Approval" button so RML staff get a request to approve
your changes.

Medical College of Georgia's Greenblatt, M.D. Library Launches Redesigned Web Presence
Web Presence: http://www.lib.mcg.edu/index.php
by Tamera P. Lee, M.L.S., Professor and Director of Libraries, Robert B. Greenblatt
M.D. Library, tlee@mail.mcg.edu
Greenblatt, M.D. Library proudly launched its newly designed and engineered web presence on September 6, 2005. It is based on what staff continues to learn from its academic medical center community through LibQUAL+, local web usability studies and student focus groups-primarily, the vital importance of convenient electronic resource access and a library web site and tools to find quality information on their own. Now, after the launch, further assessment is being conducted through the web for users campus-wide. Staff welcome comments and feedback as part of its qualitative assessment process. Check it out at http://www.lib.mcg.edu/index.php
In particular, note the Quick Links on the left side of each page. Quick Links are those key resources and services that are simply essential. These are the resources and services used most frequently and identified as those which are most important for faculty, students and researchers. They include the most popular databases, full-text sources, and Library services. This persistent set of links allows users to navigate around and use the Website most efficiently.
