MLA is offering a webcast on data management. The program, “The Diversity of Data Management: Practical Approaches for Health Sciences Librarianship,” will have Lisa Federer, AHIP, Kevin Read and Jacqueline Wirz present strategies and success stories for data management.

This webcast is designed to provide health sciences librarians with an introduction to data management, including how data is used within the research landscape, and the current climate around data management in biomedical research. Three librarians working with data management at their institutions will present case studies and examples of products and services they have implemented, and provide strategies and success stories about what has worked to get data management services up and running at their libraries.
Back in 2013 the University of Texas Health Sciences Center in San Antonio Briscoe Library received a CTSA Pilot Project Award that funded a wonderful 12 minute video educating the public on MRSA (Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus). Enjoy!

ALA-accredited master’s degree in library or information science; an understanding of general library procedures; organizational ability. Preferred: Health sciences reference experience, including database searching; familiarity with medical vocabulary and evidence-based practice as it relates to the literature; membership in the Academy of Health Information Professionals.
Job Summary: This is a faculty position which can be at the rank of instructor or it can be tenure-track with the rank of assistant librarian/assistant professor, depending on qualifications and experience. Responsibilities include:
Provision of timely and accurate reference assistance to faculty, staff, students and other patrons
Searching of databases in support of research, patient care, and other inquiries
Developing and teaching library-initiated classes, as well as teaching curriculum classes
Collection of reference statistics from all service points
Liaison duties for assigned departments
Participation in morning report
Creation and maintenance of LibGuides in assigned subject areas
Activities expected of faculty members (committee service, publishing, pursuit of grants, research, teaching)

The Next Generation of Access to Sequencing Data: Using NCBI’s SRA Toolkit to Access Data from dbGaP and SRA
Next Wednesday, February 25, NCBI staff will present a webinar on the SRA Toolkit (Sequence Read Archive), a system for accessing the approximately 3.4 Petabases of next-generation genomic and expressed sequence data housed in the NCBI Sequence Read Archive (SRA). As data sets become larger, mining information and performing comparisons directly from structured databases becomes increasingly necessary. The SRA Toolkit is not only capable of dumping the data out as a fastq or sam file, but also provides direct analysis and comparison from specific genomics regions across hundreds or thousands of samples.
In the webinar, we will show examples of configuration and use of the Toolkit for both public SRA and controlled access data associated with studies in the Database of Genotypes and Phenotypes (dbGaP).

The National Library of Medicine (NLM) is currently assessing and redesigning the Partners in Information Access for the Public Health Workforce (PHPartners.org) website. Partners in Information Access for the Public Health Workforce is a collaboration of U.S. government agencies, public health organizations, and health sciences libraries which provides timely, convenient access to selected public health resources on the Internet. ASPPH is a proud participating partner organization.
To better serve and understand the needs of its audiences, NLM is conducting surveys and usability testing. Public health graduate students, public health undergraduate students, and public health researchers are currently being recruited to participate in seven 15-30 minute sessions spread over a 12-16 month period. Each participant is not required to participate in all seven sessions.
Feedback is invaluable as NLM works to improve the PHPartners.org website. Participation by volunteers will help create a successful user experience and help make this an essential resource for the public health workforce.
Public health graduate students, public health undergraduate students, and/or public health researchers that are interested in participating in NLM’s survey and usability testing of PHPartners.org should complete an online form at https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/phpartnerswebsite by Friday, November 21.
We were delighted to host six school librarians from around the five state region in Houston, Texas today. This was our School Library Advisory Committee. Our Advisory Committee program is a way for us to learn more about the information needs of other professions so that we can create outreach programs to suit those needs.
We hope they learned as much from us as we did from them!
In addition to our Outreach Committee, we have four advisory committees: the Public Health Advisory Committee, the Public Library Advisory Committee, the School Library Advisory Committee, and the Hospital Library Advisory Committee.
