SCC/MLA Committee Assignments

Hi folks, your SCC president-elect here with a quick note. One of the prez-elect jobs is getting the committee assignments and chairs in order for the next year. As I review membership, I’m astounded by the number of volunteers. We have about 220 members right now, and over half volunteered for a committee! Thanks for making this task so easy! Armadillos are the best.

Funding Opportunity: Interventions for Health Promotion and Disease Prevention in Native American Populations (R01)

The purpose of this funding opportunity announcement (FOA) is to develop, adapt, and test the effectiveness of health promotion and disease prevention interventions in Native American (NA) populations. NA populations are exposed to considerable risk factors that significantly increase their likelihood of chronic disease, substance abuse, mental illness, oral diseases, and HIV-infection. The intervention program should be culturally appropriate and promote the adoption of healthy lifestyles, improve behaviors and social conditions and/or improve environmental conditions related to chronic diseases, the consumption of tobacco, alcohol and other drugs, mental illness, oral disease, or HIV-infection. The intervention program should be designed so that it could be sustained within the entire community within existing resources, and, if successful, disseminated in other Native American communities. The long-term goal of this FOA is to reduce mortality and morbidity in NA communities. For the purposes of this FOA Native Americans include the following populations: Alaska Native, American Indian, and Native Hawaiian. The term ‘Native Hawaiian’ means any individual any of whose ancestors were natives, prior to 1778, of the area which now comprises the State of Hawaii.

Job Ad: Assistant Director, National Library of Medicine Training Center

The Spencer S. Eccles Health Sciences Library at the University of Utah seeks an imaginative team leader with progressive ideas to lead the National Library of Medicine Training Center (NTC). The Assistant Director reports directly to the Associate Director of the NN/LM MidContinental Region. The Assistant Director plans and implements the activity of the NTC; supervises NTC professional and support staff; and, in conjunction with National Library of Medicine staff, coordinates the activities of the NTC with other components of the NN/LM program, in order to support the effective use of NLM information products and services.  With the NTC team, the Assistant Director assures compliance with all elements of the Statement of Work that is part of the contract with the National Library of Medicine and develops and implements a strategic program plan for the NTC, including the appropriate assessment and evaluation of instruction. The individual in this position prepares an annual budget and supervises the timely delivery of class reports, quarterly reports, annual reports, and evaluation reports. The Assistant Director conducts online and in-person training classes throughout the United States on PubMed, TOXNET and other topics related to training and NLM resources and coordinates NCBI training. The NTC web site, social media plan, and national and regional class registration system falls under the Assistant Director’s supervision.  Responsibilities also include monitoring new developments related to NLM products and services and monitoring, disseminating and incorporating new information and trends related to distance learning, adult learning and instruction.

Salary and Benefits:

Based on experience, starting at $73,000 minimum annually. Position is a full-time, non-tenure track faculty position. Rank is dependent on the qualifications of the candidate. Faculty benefits include 200 hours of vacation, and 12 days of sick leave annually. There is a generous TIAA/ CREF retirement employer contribution. NLM Community Health Maps (CHM) survey

The National Library of Medicine (NLM) needs your help reaching out to current and potential users of low-cost and easy-to-use online mapping tools (GIS).

Its Community Health Maps (CHM) project (http://communityhealthmaps.nlm.nih.gov) identifies and promotes tools that seek to meet the mapping needs of communities and community organizations such as clinics, schools, libraries, health departments, faith-based and community-based groups. These tools can be used to collect and visualize health statistics and local resources, to compare data across locations, and to explore trends.

Survey: The Community Health Maps Project

The National Library of Medicine is actively seeking participation from community organizations such as clinics, schools, libraries, health departments, faith-based and community-based institutions. The NLM is currently working on the Community Health Maps project. The CHM project is to identify and promote easy-to-use mapping tools for the public. In order to make this project a success, public feedback is needed. If you are a participant or know an individual who is part of a community organization, please complete/share the GIS user needs survey at http://disasterinfo.nlm.nih.gov/dimrc/2015disasteroutreachrfq.html. The Disaster Health Information and Collaboration Project 2015

The National Library of Medicine has announced funding for endeavors that would benefit individuals that participate in health-related disaster preparedness, response and recovery. The submitting application must include at least one library and organization that has experience, expertise or capability of disaster –related preparedness. Some examples are health departments, public safety departments, emergency management departments, fire/rescue, voluntary/faith-based organizations, etc.

The proposal should explain how it would be mutually beneficial and collaborative among the participating organizations.

The winning project proposals will be offered a minimum of 15,000 to 30,000 each, for one year.

The deadline for submission is July 6, 2015, at 12pm ET.

A Seat At the Table: Working With Local Responders CE being offered at this year’s MLA in May

The National Library of Medicine Disaster Information Management Research Center is sponsoring one of the CEs that is being offered at the Medical Library Association Conference in May. The class “A Seat at the Table: Working with Local Responders” is being offered for $50. Anyone can attend the CE without having to register for the conference. Tox Town Updates the Town Neighborhood

Tox Town is the National Library of Medicine’s interactive Web site about commonly encountered toxic substances, the environment, and health. Enhanced with lively graphics, sound effects, and animation, Tox Town brings to life the everyday locations where you might encounter potentially toxic chemicals.

The Town neighborhood now has a new photorealistic look. All of the location and chemical information is the same, but the new graphics allow users to better identify with real-life locations. The Town scene is now in HTML5 so it can be accessed on a variety of personal electronic devices, including computers, iPads, iPad minis, and tablets.
