DOCLINE Support of Internet Explorer 8 and 9 Ending October 1

DOCLINE will no longer support Internet Explorer 8 or Internet Explorer 9, as of October 1, 2015.  DOCLINE may continue to work with these browsers, however we will not test new versions of DOCLINE and Loansome Doc with them, nor fix any future issues that occur only in IE8 or IE9.

Microsoft is ending support for Internet Explorer versions 8, 9, and 10, as of January 2016, we therefore encourage users to upgrade to IE11, if possible.  Seehttp://blogs.msdn.com/b/ie/archive/2014/08/07/stay-up-to-date-with-internet-explorer.aspx

Please note that we are finishing up development of DOCLINE 5.2. This release will be tested with the current Internet Explorer version (11) and the previous version (10), as well as Firefox.  5.2 will add a library schedule feature, and will allow multiple ‘out of office’ date ranges over the course of a year.

Job Ad: Scientific Support Coordinator & Research Librarian

Job Summary/Basic Function:

This multi-faceted roles involves providing research library services as well as scientific and high-level administrative support for the Vice President of Research. Responsibilities include but are not limited to acting as the liaison between OMRF and OUHSC’s Bird Library to ensure continual shared access to electronic databases, books and journals. Assisting with the planning of various events like the Scientific Retreat, Research Forum, Work In Progress seminars, and Responsible Conduct of Research training including scheduling and arranging travel as needed. Recommending potential additional resources for purchase consideration and staying abreast of and recommending technology support upgrades. Regularly monitoring, updating and making corrections to research publication database. Assisting with animal protocol searches to meet IACUC requirements. Providing assistance with grant submissions by monitoring and managing PubMed Central article compliance and verifying citations, bibliographies and reference lists. Providing PMC and other appropriate training to administrative assistants. Maintaining and monitoring budget, scheduling and tracking appointments and providing other administrative support. Screening and sending internal email messages to scientific staff regarding various requests, information and needs. Assisting with library webpage updates as needed. Providing one-time and ongoing search assistance to scientific and administrative staff as needed. Assisting with OMRF archiving projects as needed to ensure proper maintenance, documentation, indexing and future search-ability of institutional knowledge. Providing other assistance as requested and completing other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree in Science, Business, Library Sciences, or related area plus three years of administrative experience. Must be meticulously detail oriented, professional, customer service oriented, organized and dependable. Superb computer skills including Microsoft Office Suite and experience with databases as well as excellent verbal and written communication skills are essential. Excellent searching, calendar management, and scheduling skills and experience.  Must be able to operate professionally as a team member and independently; manage and prioritize multiple, competing, time-sensitive projects; and develop and maintain constructive, cooperative internal and external working relationships. Must have ability to evolve with changing needs, remain calm and professional when dealing with difficult situations, meet deadlines, and solve problems with minimal guidance.

Preferred Qualifications:

Strong familiarity, comfort and experience with PubMed and MeSH. Experience with Sharepoint or other central, electronic document management program. Experience training others on an individual and group basis ideal. Previous experience in a research, university and/or non-profit environment preferred.

Increased Funding for Emerging Technology Awards

We have opened our Emerging Technology Awards up for a new round of funding (application). The total amount of funding per project has been increased to $7,000. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis and will be accepted through Friday, October 16, 2015.
The purpose of the Emerging Technology Award (ETA) is to assist libraries in the integration of new and emerging technologies in their institutions to promote health information services.

Potential emerging technologies include but are not limited to: 3-D printing and/or scanning, wearable technologies, application of the “Internet of Things” for health purposes, the use of gamification for the promotion of health information or the creation of mobile applications focused on health information or increasing access ton high quality health information. Special emphasis is given to projects that utilize products or services from the National Library of Medicine (NLM) and National Institutes of Health (NIH). Examples of resources including but not limited to; resources available from the NLM Gallery of Mobile Apps and Sites, free NLM Application Programing Interface (API) and the NIH 3D Print Exchange.

MLA 2016 Deadline for Submissions: Sep. 15

The deadline is coming quickly to submit an abstract for “Mosaic: Be Part of the Big Picture l Mosaique: Faites partie du portrait global”, to be held May 13–18, 2016, in Toronto, ON, Canada.

The submission date is earlier this year to accommodate the joint meeting of the Medical Library Association (MLA), Canadian Health Libraries Association/Association des bibliothèques de la santé du Canada (CHLA/ABSC), and International Clinical Librarian Conference (ICLC).

The call for submissions seeks abstracts for contributed content that supports the theme, “Mosaic: Be Part of the Big Picture.” New this year, authors will rank how they would prefer to present their content: paper, poster, or lightning talk.

Also new are special content sessions. Groups (such as sections, chapters, special interest groups [SIGs], and others) are invited to submit proposals for engaging 1.5-hour-long sessions.

When submitting your structured abstract, decide if it’s either a research abstract or a program description abstract:

  • Research abstracts report on designing, conducting, and analyzing a research project.
  • Program description abstracts describe the creation and improvement of products, programs, technologies, administrative practices, or services conducted by librarians and information professionals.

The distinction is important because your abstract will be appraised using different criteria. Criteria for both Research and Program abstracts are available in the Papers and Posters FAQ.

The annual meeting of the South Central Chapter of MLA is quickly approaching. (Oct. 2-7 2015) Early Bird registration ends August 31, 2015. POSITION DESCRIPTION – OUTREACH & MARKETING  COORDINATOR

The University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) Library seeks an outgoing, knowledgeable librarian for the position of Outreach and Marketing Coordinator. The University and the Library have strong commitments to outreach and service to the state of Arkansas, with an increasing emphasis on outreach as a hallmark of these institutions. We are looking for a flexible team player capable of leading multi-department outreach and marketing teams. Knowledge of marketing practices and experience utilizing professional design techniques is expected. This librarian must have a positive attitude toward service and a strong ability to connect with people in a genuine manner. It is also imperative that this librarian be able to represent UAMS, NN/LM and NLM with the utmost professionalism.

CAMPUS Setting
Founded in 1879, UAMS is the only academic health sciences center in Arkansas. The UAMS Library supports the education, clinical, research, and outreach activities of six colleges (Graduate School, Health Professions, Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy, and Public Health), a comprehensive medical center, and several institutes of excellence. The UAMS Library serves the health information needs of the citizens in Pulaski County and provides support to the rest of the state through a nationally renowned network of Regional Center Libraries (formerly AHECs).  This Library also serves as the only resource library in the state for the National Network of Libraries of Medicine.

EDUCATION & REFERENCE SERVICES (E&RS)
The E&RS faculty is a team of five librarians directly reporting to the Head of Education and Reference Services. This faculty position participates in coverage of daily reference activities including providing one-on-one end user education, teaching classes, answering reference questions, and providing assistance with basic literature searching. This librarian coordinates the off-campus outreach and marketing activities of the Library and works closely with other members of reference to support the educational, research, and clinical information needs of an academic health sciences center.
All reference librarians participate as active members of the Library’s Liaison Team acting as liaison to departments, programs or colleges as assigned. They also serve on library, university, professional and/or public service committees and contribute to the departmental and the Library’s strategic planning processes.

PROFESSIONAL ACTIVITIES
All reference librarians hold faculty status and are strongly encouraged to participate in professional activities in a manner of their choosing. Activities may include service to local, regional or national professional associations. Contributions to the profession’s knowledge base via original research, presentations at conferences, consultations as a topic expert, creation of and teaching continuing education courses and/or original publications are included. The pursuit of expertise and improvement of skills via continuing education are encouraged for all reference librarians.

SPECIFIC OUTREACH  RESPONSIBILITIES

§  Plans and coordinates UAMS Library’s outreach programs throughout Arkansas (exhibits and classes) to meet designated outreach responsibilities as a Resource Library in the National Network of Libraries of Medicine;
§  Manages National Network of Libraries of Medicine South Central Region (NN/LM SCR) subcontract awards;
§  Compiles, writes and completes all reports and invoices (written and online), for the subcontract, quarterly reports and outreach activity reporting system;
§  Prepares RFP proposals annually for NN/LM SCR Outreach Subcontract Award;
§  Coordinates with Library’s Administrative office to ensure timely submission of RFP & grant paperwork and all travel requests;
§  Leads the Library’s Outreach Team and coordinates meetings, communication and training;
§  Organizes, arranges, conducts and/or coordinates volunteers for exhibits at professional conferences of health professionals and librarians; health fairs for the general public;
§  Organizes, arranges,  teaches and/or coordinates volunteers to teach classes for non-affiliated health professionals, librarians, and any target groups identified in the NN/LM subcontract;
§  Travels within Arkansas, as needed, (via a rental vehicle outside of Little Rock) to conduct or promote NN/LM Outreach activities and UAMS Library resources and services;
§  Maintains a high level of knowledge of all NLM databases, websites and resources in order to teach and promote them effectively;
§  Represents the UAMS Library at NN/LM SCR Outreach Committee meetings;
§  Coordinates and assists with any special projects related to outreach activities.

SPECIFIC MARKETING  RESPONSIBILITIES

§  Meets with Management Team and Library departments regarding PR and marketing needs;
§  Creates and maintains the Library’s Marketing Plan based on individual department needs;
§  Creates and maintains displays on Library’s 1st floor monitor and future electronic marketing equipment;
§  Serves as co-administrator of the Library’s website, our main marketing tool. Utilizes social media tools to promote library programs and services;
§  Evaluates library marketing and promotion endeavors for success, possible improvements, expansion etc.;
§  Stays informed of trends in library, academic and commercial marketing areas
§  Leads and coordinates the Library’s Marketing Team and assigns marketing events, tasks and programs to appropriate team members;
§  Acts as Library Liaison to UAMS’ Communications & Marketing Dept.;
§  Coordinates and assists with any special projects related to marketing activities.
QUALIFICATIONS – REQUIRED
§  Master’s degree in Library Science from an ALA-accredited program
[Candidates with the required experience and graduating with an MLS (or equivalent) in
December 2015 are encouraged to apply.]
§  Experience providing reference services in an academic or health sciences setting
§  Experience providing outreach and/or marketing services in an academic or health sciences setting
*   Experience with biomedical resources and databases (including MEDLINE)
§  Ability to work well independently, as part of a team, and as the leader of a team
§  Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to communicate (verbally and in writing) with physicians, hospital administrators, researchers and other health professionals at the colleague level
§  Ability to make high quality, professional presentations

QUALIFICATIONS  –  PREFERRED
§  Undergraduate or graduate degree or additional training in marketing/communications/graphics-related fields
§  Undergraduate or graduate degree or additional training in a biomedical science field
§  Experience providing marketing services in an academic library setting including promotion of library programs on extended campuses or to the community
§  Experience with evaluation and assessment of library resources and services
§  Demonstrated ability to create successful marketing plans and to design promotional materials, coordinate work flows, and implement projects
§  Experience teaching and/or making public presentations at the academic health sciences level
§  Experience using image-editing software, graphics programs and desktop publishing
§  Experience providing NN/LM-funded outreach services  (at Resource Library or Regional Medical Library level)
§  Experience as a NN/LM grant writer/reviewer OR experience writing grant proposals at the academic, NN/LM  or NIH level

POSITION BENEFITS & APPLICATION INFORMATION

Minimum salary is $46,500, commensurate with education and experience. This is a 12-month, non-tenure track faculty appointment with a competitive benefits package with 22 days vacation, 11 holidays, and 12 days sick leave annually, and retirement plan options including TIAA/CREF and Fidelity. UAMS will contribute an amount equal to 5% of your salary to your retirement account; your contributions over 5% are matched by UAMS up to 10%.

Big Data to Knowledge (BD2K) Software Development FOA

The NIH Big Data to Knowledge (BD2K) Initiative has announced the release of a funding opportunity announcement (FOA) for software and methods development in biomedical big data science. If you know someone that is skilled or has an interest in data-related sciences, please mention this announcement.

Big Data to Knowledge Development of Software Tools and Methods for Biomedical Big Data in Targeted Areas of High Need (U01)

The FOA has three topic areas for researchers working with biomedical Big Data, they are:

  1. Data Privacy
  2. Data Repurposing
  3. Applying Metadata

Call for Applications: Library Student Outreach Award

Do you know a library student who is interested in learning more about health sciences librarianship and health information outreach? This award provides travel and registration money for South Central Region library students to attend the South Central Chapter of the Medical Library Association (SCC/MLA) Annual Meeting in Little Rock, AR, October 2-7, 2015. We plan to sponsor eight students this year.
