Tulane’s libraries are a key component of academic life at the University and play an important role in enhancing cultural life in New Orleans. The University’s main library on the uptown campus, the Howard-Tilton Memorial Library (H-TML), is supported by 36 professional FTE, 65 support FTE and a materials expenditure of $8.8 million. H-TML houses a research collection of more than four million volumes, 600+ electronic database subscriptions and as a member of the prestigious Association of Research Libraries since 1967, it is ranked amongst the top 125 research libraries in North America. Also housed within the H-TML building is the Latin American Library (LAL) which is among the world’s foremost comprehensive collections of Latin American and Caribbean research materials and ranks among the top five in the United States. The LAL has over 510,000 volumes, including 810 current periodical subscriptions, and a growing number of electronic resources and receives visitors from around the world who come to New Orleans to consult its collections.

In addition to its general collections, H-TML is also home to many special collections in Joseph Merrick Jones Hall. The Louisiana Research Collections (LaRC) is the oldest, largest, and most comprehensive research center for New Orleans and the second largest for Louisiana. The William Ransom Hogan Jazz Archive is the leading research center for the study of New Orleans jazz and related musical genres, including New Orleans ragtime, gospel, blues, rhythm and blues, and Creole songs. The Rare Books unit preserves approximately 50,000 titles ranging chronologically from a leaf of the Gutenberg Bible (ca. 1456) to recent first editions. The Southeastern Architectural Archive (SEAA) is the largest repository of architectural records in the southern United States and has progressively sought to enhance the preservation and conservation of architectural records associated with the built environment of the southeastern Gulf Region, while the University Archives collects materials related to the history of the university, offering access to the “physical memory” of Tulane University. Additionally, the Rudolph Matas Library of the Health Sciences (Matas Library), located on the downtown campus, reports to the Dean of Libraries and Academic Information Resources and specifically serves as the resource library for the School of Medicine, the School of Public Health & Tropical Medicine, and the Tulane National Primate Research Center. The Matas Library offers 24/7 access to study and computing areas and houses print, electronic and digitized collections of rare medical and health-related materials for the use of clinical and research faculty as well as students and fellows.

Tulane’s uptown campus is also home to five additional libraries with separate reporting lines, including: the Turchin Business Library, Newcomb Archives & Vorhoff Library Special Collections, the Law Library, Koch Library of Botany, and Amistad Research Center.

Reporting to the Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost, the next Dean will be a respected leader in the field who will partner with key Tulane constituents to leverage the Libraries’ current momentum in the development of an ambitious strategic plan for the future. The Dean will be a collaborative and energetic leader who will enhance the trajectory for the Libraries and define a pathway for creating a library system for the digital age. Furthermore, the Dean will develop and manage a budget, and other resources, to support the implementation of the strategic plan and achieve the new vision for the Libraries.

The Dean will be expected to be a passionate and tireless fundraiser and advocate for the Libraries. The Dean must possess strong interpersonal skills and the ability to engage and excite others about the vision and mission of the Libraries. Equally, he/she must expand the Libraries’ donor base and stimulate enthusiasm among existing and new donors to support new initiatives and enhance current programs.

The Dean must possess exceptional leadership skills and have the ability to work effectively with University faculty and academic administrators across the campus to build effective relationships and a collaborative environment that fosters research and teaching excellence. In leading the Libraries, the next Dean will support the University’s overall academic program—focusing on key areas such as research, teaching and student engagement and learning.

Comic: The Amazing Captain Fit – from LSUHSC-Shreveport Librarians!

Health sciences librarians Talicia Tarver and Deidra Woodson have created The Amazing Captain Fit, a health-related comic book. Tarver and Woodson collaborated with illustrator Nick Fechter, an LSU-S graphic art student, and consulted with Dr. John Vanchiere from the Department of Pediatrics. The authors’ goals are to improve health literacy and combat obesity among young children. Production of the comic book was funded by the Health Information Literacy Award given by the National Network of Libraries of Medicine, South Central Region.

Texas Library Association: Austin, TX 2015

NN/LM South Central Region Coordinators Lindsy Frazer and Marcus Spann attended last week’s Texas Library Association Annual Conference in Austin, TX. This was a great opportunity to  raise awareness of authoritative sources of biomedical information across our five state region. The Texas Library Association is the largest state library association. More than 7,000 attended this year. Lindsy and Marcus met librarians from public, school, academic and special libraries.  We plan to exhibit at TLA next year when it will be held in Houston, TX, and hope to see you there!

NLM Announces Pill Image Recognition Request for Information (RFI)

Responses, to Help with Project Planning Purposes, Due May 15, 2015

As part of its ongoing work to develop an infrastructure and tools for identifying prescription pills, the National Library of Medicine announces a new Request for Information (RFI), the details of which appear below. This is NOT a solicitation for proposals, proposal abstracts, or quotations. The purpose of this RFI is to obtain knowledge and information for project planning purposes. The government will not award a contract on the basis of this notice, or otherwise pay for information solicited by it. Proprietary information should be clearly marked. The requested information is for planning and market research purposes only and will not be publicly released.

This Request for Information (RFI) is a pilot for a forthcoming Pill Image Recognition Challenge for visually identifying pills. The Challenge has as its main objective the development and discovery of high-quality software that matches images of unknown prescription pills to images in the RxIMAGE database. The pilot will help ensure that the Challenge is successful.

Get Ready for a New MedlinePlus! – April 28

MedlinePlus, the premiere consumer health website from the National Library of Medicine, will be debuting a new look and interface starting April 28.

Based on a website design concept called “Responsive Design“, this new look will be fully compatible with using the website on a desktop/laptop, tablet, and/or cellphone.

The new MedlinePlus desktop/laptop view will have a 3-column look; tablet view will have a 2-column look; and cellphone view will consist of 1 column.

The great features and sections of MedlinePlus will remain, making it possible for health consumers to access and utilize its quality, reliable and up-to-date information anytime, anywhere, on any device.

Job Ad: Texas Tech HSC Executive Director of Libraries

Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center (TTUHSC) is seeking an Executive Director of Libraries that will provide leadership for the library and assure alignment with the vision, mission and strategic plan of the University.  The Executive Director must have a proven ability to interact effectively and productively with diverse individuals and groups.  The Executive Director of the Libraries will provide a clear vision of the evolving role of the Libraries and how they directly support the strategic initiatives and intellectual core of the university.  As the chief administrative officer of the TTUHSC Libraries, the Executive Director reports to the Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs.

The TTUHSC Libraries of the Health Sciences compose one integrated library system that serves the needs of TTUHSC students, faculty and staff in academic programs across all schools and campuses, as well as those enrolled in distance education programs.  The library system includes three physical locations and extensive electronic resources accessible through secured remote access.  The central administration of the TTUHSC Libraries is located in the Preston Smith Library of the Health Sciences in Lubbock.  Other physical sites include the Harrington Library of the Health Sciences in Amarillo and the Library of the Health Sciences in Odessa.

The TTUHSC library system has collections in excess of 321,000 bound volumes; more than 62,000 electronic books; subscriptions to more than 24,000 electronic journals; and access to more than 500 electronic databases.

Minimum Qualifications:

Educational requirement: A Master’s Degree in Library and Information Sciences from an accredited American Library Association Program or an international equivalent

Prior Experience:  The candidate is required to have at least 5 years of progressive and accomplished experience in library administrative/leadership roles that include significant responsibilities for budgetary oversight and resource planning, preferably in an academic health sciences library or similar setting

Annual Salary: Commensurate with experience

In her previous role as Emerging Technologies Librarian at the Health Professions Division Library, Nova Southeastern University, Amanda was tasked with leading a change in culture by implementing an iPad lending program and an award-winning circulation program for iOS apps focused on enhancing student engagement and academic success.

Bio: Devica Samsundar, MLIS, AHIP has held various positions in the library at Baptist Health South Florida since 1991. Currently she is the Corporate Director of Library & Information Services, where one of her responsibilities is to oversee the life cycle of electronic resources for the institution. In her prior roles as Manager of Electronic Resources and Electronic Resources Librarian she was responsible for administration, support, and evaluation of electronic resource.

Bio: Nadine Dexter, MLS, D-AHIP, is responsible for the successful start-up, planning, direction, and operation of all administrative and service functions of the Health Sciences Library. She is currently working with faculty and staff to create an environment that promotes growth, creativity and motivation throughout the College. She is also working on developing and applying technology tools for teaching, learning, assessment and outreach; as she is preparing for integrating library-training programs into the health sciences curricula and clinical environment. Nadine will also provide for the strategic use of knowledge resources and developing partnerships that support sources of external funding.

Bio: Kimberley Barker, MLIS, Barker is the University of Virginia’s Claude Moore Health Sciences Library’s Digital Initiatives Librarian, and also serves as chair of the Technology Program Advisory Committee for the National Network of Libraries of Medicine, Southeastern/Atlantic Region.
