QDPortal Program (Version 1.1.4 - released 23-Jul-2008)

for use with DOCLINE 3.4 (7/24/2008) and all earlier versions

[Print this page, then use the links below to download the appropriate installation program.]

Changes in QDPortal 1.1.4

The only changes in version 1.1.4 from 1.1.3 are changes that we see when capturing Lends and Borrows from DOCLINE 3.4.  After a few weeks of testing, when the important data (e.g., the  Request Number), appeared in first one cell, then another, it seemed to me that we needed to interrogate both if we were going anywhere.  I'm not sure whether these are faults of the NLM displays, or whether I've been just missing them in the past (I do have some evidence that the early DOCLINE requests were captured in one place, but then moved to another, but who might care about that?); in any event, it makes sense to plan for either contingency.

So QDPortal 1.1.4 looks in BOTH places for DOCLINE Request Info.

While QDPortal 1.1.3 might capture some of the DOCLINE activity, we don't know where that ends, and the recommendation, therefore, is that ALL QDPortal users should upgrade to version 1.1.4 as soon as possible.  Instructions below.

ALL QuickDOC users should be running QDPortal Version 1.1.4

in order to be compatible with DOCLINE 3.4.

How to Install (or Update to) QDPortal 1.1.4

There are three methods you can use to update (or install):

1. Use the Web-based update (quickest method if you're not sure where the current program is located);

2. Use the Complete Installation Program (always the safest and REQUIRED for new installations).

3. Download and Replace the QDPortal.exe executable (ONLY for updates, and you must know where it is);

1. Web-based Installation (quickest option for updates, if permitted by firewall).

Click on the qdpv10.exe file at the website (in the QDManual folder, but the link at the left will work, too) and choose Save To Disk. Choose a folder in the Save In box that you can easily find later (Desktop is the best choice, but C:\Temp or a central location if you're updating more than one machine are also okay).

2. Download Entire Program (brand-new installs, or if you get "Authentication" errors).

Click on the QDPNoWeb.exe file (clicking the link at the left will work) and choose Save To Disk. Choose a folder you can easily find later (Desktop is the best choice, but C:\Temp or a central location if you're updating more than one machine are also okay).

3. Download and Replace only the QDPortal.exe file.

This option is only available on machines currently running QDPortal 1.1.3 (and on a machine that has already had the CFTitles.Lst file edited, or was first installed with 1.1.3!)  If in doubt, DON'T use this method; use either method 1 or 2 listed above. To replace only the executable, (while making sure that there were no changes in the support files during that time---and how would you know?) you can follow these two steps.  (Psst!  Better to just do a new installation at the same location, overwriting old files and making sure you're up to date.)  But if you know you're just replacing an old executable:

a). First find out where your current QDPortal executable is.

Right-click your current QDPortal icon on the desktop and choose Properties, and then Shortcut Tab to see where your current QDPortal.exe file is located. Make a note of the full path to the folder with the QDPortal.exe file (e.g., C:\Program Files\QDPortal). This is the folder into which you will want to save the new QDPortal executable. (Hint: It's NEVER the desktop for qdportal.exe!)

b). Download the new QDPortal.exe file.

Click on this QDPortal.exe link and choose Save To Disk. Use the Save In box at the top of the File Download form to choose the folder where your original QDPortal.EXE file is currently located (see a, above, again NEVER the desktop for direct exe downloads---if you've chosen correctly you should also see a message box noting that the file already exists when you try to save it---answer Yes to let the new version overwrite the old).

c). Why not use the real Install Program?

It's always safer to use the full installation program if you have any doubts at all. DON'T use this option (#3), of course, if QDPortal isn't already loaded on the target machine. If you're in any doubt, just use one of the regular installs in methods 1 or 2, above.

Once the new file is copied over the old one, the update is complete. But be sure that you're overwriting the active old QDPortal.exe file on each machine that is currently using QDPortal; you can always check the version of QDPortal on any machine by clicking the Setup Screen button at the lower right of the main QDPortal form and checking the version number just next to the 'Finished' button. No more steps necessary here.

Whichever of these last three methods you use, once the file is saved, close down your browser and exit any other programs that might be running. If the install program is checking for files it needs to update and one of these is open, you'll have to reboot the computer to continue on, so the fewer files open the better.

[To do a full or web-based installation you may need Admin rights on most machines. To do updates of only the executable, as long as you have user rights in the QDPortal program folder (which most users will have), you can replace the old qdportal.exe with the new one.]

Find the qdpv10.exe (or QDPNoWeb.exe) icon on the Desktop (or the file in the Temp Directory (or wherever you put it)) and click on it. The Wise Installation Program will begin.

[In the event that your browser saves the file to some unknown destination, use the FindFile or Search tool in Windows to search for it; you'll appreciate the idea of saving to the desktop from that point on.]

Take the defaults as offered. Put the QDPortal Program in its own folder under Program Files (this should be the default anyway, unless you've already downloaded it and placed it someplace else). Make the backup folder when asked. If you ever need to uninstall QDPortal, you can do so in the Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs, and any system files updated in the installation will be returned to their older versions.

When the install is finished, you may be prompted to reboot, depending upon whether files needed to be updated. You'll see a QDPortal Shortcut on the Desktop. Double-click this and you'll be brought to a brief setup screen (first time only), for which you'll need your DOCLINE UserID, password, etc.

[Because QDPortal stores its temporary records of DOCLINE activity on the local C:\ Drive, you should install QDPortal on the C: Drive of any computer on which you'll be logging onto DOCLINE.  Users will need rights in folders QDBorrow and QDLoan, just off the root on the C: drive, as well as in the QDPortal Program folder.  Starting with version 1.1.2, QDPortal can also be run on machines without a C: drive; DOCLINE pages are then saved to QDBorrow and QDLoan folders just beneath wherever the QuickDOC.MDB database is located.]

Check Your Browser Security & Internet Settings

Whichever version of IE you're using, be sure to make sure your settings match those required by DOCLINE for controlling Navigation to and from PubMed and Locator+, as well as preventing the posting of cached versions of pages. Check for information on your Browser setup at:

http://www.nlm.nih.gov/docline/system_requirements.html

If you check the Check for newer versions "Every visit to the page" then any old old page displays should disappear. And don't forget to enable Cookies and Active scripting, etc., to facilitate navigation amongst the various NLM sites.

Note on "Authentication" Errors

If you get errors while performing the web install that mention "Authentication..." it's probably related to the downloading of individual components during the install: your firewall may not approve. While the web install method is HIGHLY recommended---it only downloads files you actually need, not the entire program---if you firewall won't permit it, then you can't use it. Use the QDPNoWeb.exe file mentioned above.
