The QuickDOC Program(QD4Win 2.1.8)

Installation

(Last Rev 6/10/2007)

QuickDOC Version 2.1.8 has been released to add the ability to import items from OCLC Resource Sharing reports.  Both versions 2.1.7 and 2.1.8 will work with DOCLINE 3.1 so there is no need to upgrade from 2.1.7 if you don't use OCLC.

What's New in QuickDOC 2.1.8:

A description of the changes in this upgrade is in the What's New in QuickDOC 2.1.8 PDF document (QDNew218.pdf), which is 31 pages long and includes illustrations and instructions for the changes, along with any "Action Items" that describe actions you should take before updating. (It's mostly a description of the new OCLC Import process, but should be read carefully by any library using OCLC for ILL.)

Full information about the new version can be found in the QuickDOC Manual (a PDF file that will be downloaded as part of the installation and placed in the QuickDOC Program Folder under the name QuickDOC.PDF; a shortcut to this file is also available under Help on the QuickDOC Menu Bar). If you want to check on ALL changes before downloading, you can first download the entire QuickDOC Manual (it's about 450 pages, perhaps 9MB in size, so right-click on the link and choose Save to peruse it locally at your leisure), but most people just use the manual that comes with the download or the QuickDOC.hlp file.

Information on previous updates (2.1.1 - 2.1.7):

For those updating to 2.1.8 from versions earlier than 2.1.6, you may have "Action Items" related to this update.  Check the appropriate "What's New" documents by looking at the pdf files named QDNew21n.pdf, where n = the last number in versions higher than yours, in the http://nnlm.gov/quickdoc/ folder.

HOW TO DOWNLOAD AND INSTALL

1. If you're updating from QuickDOC 2.x.x:

Download

Be sure to print a copy of this page, and also print out the general DownLoad and Installation Instructions (DownInst.PDF); these will give you a step-by-step untroduction to the Download and Installation process. You'll want to have a printed copy of DownInst.PDF, and of this page, available before you click either of the installation files below.

When you're ready to begin the download, click on either the complete installation file link (less necessary for an update, where only file changes need to be downloaded and installed), or the faster Web-based installation file, both of which are also highlighted below. Also keep in mind that QuickDOC continues to need QDPortal (latest version is now 1.1.2) to run the DOCLINE session and save the transaction information as it happens.

If you can use the Web-based installation (filename: QD21.exe) without "Authentication Errors" then by all means do so, since this is a much faster way to download updates.  New Installations, and those updating more than one computer, might just as well use the complete installation file choice.  Download the complete installation program to a central spot; then run it from there on each machine where the installation is to be performed.

If you can't use the Web-based installation because you experience "Authentication Errors" during the download, use the complete installation file (filename: QDSetup.exe), which downloads the entire Installation file (about 53MB) and then runs the installation from that file only, so that no outside access through the firewall is needed during installation.

As always, if there was something that didn't work to your satisfaction in the earlier version (known as an "infelicity" in QuickDOC parlance), you can check the current list of fixes at http://nnlm.gov/quickdoc/QDFixes.html . Please let me know, either directly by email or through QuickDOC-L if you find any other infelicity not mentioned and fixed.

Install

N.B., Because QuickDOC Updates sometimes make changes to Tables and Fields in the QuickDOC.MDB Database the first time it is run after installation , it is important that ALL USERS BE LOGGED OUT OF QuickDOC (and the database) WHEN THE PROGRAM IS STARTED AFTER BEING INSTALLED ON THE FIRST MACHINE. This is always good practice during installations but is especially important when structural changes in the database are a part of the installation process. Backing up your current QuickDOC.MDB before beginning the installation is another useful precaution.

If you are upgrading from QuickDOC Version 2.1.3 or earlier, this upgrade will also include an upgrade to MDAC 2.7 Refresh, so you may see that update installed first, and a reboot called for, after which the upgrade/installation will proceed normally. The next QuickDOC update will likely move to MDAC 2.8, which supports only Win98 or later, so Windows 95 users might want to plan accordingly (because MDAC 2.8 isn't supported for Win95 doesn't mean it won't work on that system; it just means that Microsoft won't care if it doesn't!).

Also, if you upgrade from 2.x.x to 2.1.8 on one machine, you must then upgrade all other machines that point to the QuickDOC.MDB database , since the database structure is now different. Again, this is good practice for ALL updates.

Because QuickDOC 2.1.8 (unless you've already installed 2.1.4-2.1.7) installs the 2.7 Refresh Version of Microsoft Data Access Components ( MDAC 2.7 Refresh), you may see a notice that these files are being installed (if so, it will require a reboot). QuickDOC 2.1.8 (again, unless you've already installed anything after 2.1.3) also installs the latest version of the MS Jet support files ( MSJet 4.0 SP8), so you may also see a notice to reboot for these as well.

While you're upgrading, in the Installation Program, check to be sure that the early screen headed Choose Destination Location points to C:\Program Files\QuickDOC, or else to whatever folder it is where you've installed QuickDOC. Sometimes that installation program gets confused, so you've got to help it out! Otherwise, well, you can imagine.

Also, even if you're installing the QuickDOC program to be run from a central share (not recommended, but permitted), you'll still have to run the Installation Program on each machine, so that any changes to support files in the Windows folder of that machine are also updated.  In general, it's recommended that the QuickDOC Program be installed on each machine, and the QuickDOC.MDB database be located on a network share, where all machines can point to it.

2. If you're installing QuickDOC for the first time (New Installation):

Download

Be sure to print a copy of this page, and also print out the general DownLoad and Installation Instructions (DownInst.PDF); these will give you a step-by-step untroduction to the Download and Installation process. You'll want to have a printed copy of the DownInst.PDF document, and of this page, available before you click either of the installation files below.

When you're ready to begin the download, click on either the complete installation file link (recommended), or the Web-based installation file, both of which are also highlighted below. If you're installing on more than one machine, download the complete installation file to a central location, and then run it from that location on each machine.  If you're installing on one machine only, download the file to the Desktop and run it from there.  Also keep in mind that QuickDOC continues to need QDPortal (latest version is now 1.1.2) to run the DOCLINE session and save the transaction information as it happens.

Install

N.B., Because QuickDOC installs the 2.7 Refresh version of Microsoft Data Access Components (MDAC 2.7 Refresh), unless you're running Windows XP SP2 or have installed MDAC 2.7 Refresh earlier, you'll have to reboot at least once as these components are installed. QuickDOC 2.1.8 also installs the latest version of the Microsoft Jet support files (MSJet 4.0 SP8), so you will probably also see a notice to reboot for these as well. The most important thing to remember is that the install program should be allowed to run ALL THE WAY THROUGH, even if it takes a some time to update all the components.on.

After downloading the file:

QuickDOC Manual:

The complete QuickDOC Manual is also available for downloading (it comes as a part of the QuickDOC Installation, though, with a shortcut available under Help on the QuickDOC Menu Bar, so there's no need to download it separately unless you want to take a look at it first, to see if you want to go through with the download). The manual includes many graphics and screen shots, so it isn't a small download. It's about 8MB in size and prints out at 413 pages. The file is at

http://nnlm.gov/quickdoc/QuickDOC.PDF

Don't try to read and print any of these PDFs online; choose Save (or File - Save) to the Desktop and then, after closing your Browser, run it from there. It was created in Adobe Acrobat 5.0, so the graphics are fairly well represented and should be readable on most systems.
