Wikipedia Editing for Academic Credit: An Elective Course at UCSF Medical School

At the end of April, 2014, seven 4th year medical students at University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) received academic credit for editing a high importance Wikipedia (WP) healthcare article. The students were part of the second iteration of an elective first piloted five months earlier. The first iteration received extensive media attention from the New York Times, the Atlantic, NPR and others. Why the interest? Perhaps it has something to do with a combination of the mixed feelings many have about WP, fascination mixed with concern by the health-consuming public that the future healthcare providers of the U.S. are getting their information from WP, and that the “ivory tower” has embraced the concept. Express Outreach Award Highlights: Public Access to the Coachella Valley 2013 Community Health Monitor Results

In January 2006, the California Wellness Foundation, the Desert Healthcare District Foundation, and the Regional Access Project Foundation convened on behalf of a health data collection system for the Coachella Valley, located in Southern California’s eastern Riverside County. In September 2006, Health Assessment Resource Center (HARC) was incorporated, and by February 2007, became an independent 501(c)3 nonprofit organization. In alignment with our mission, the triennial community health assessment is the centerpiece of our core competencies. HARC was the recipient of a 2013 NN/LM PSR Express Outreach Award of $9,000 to announce and distribute the 2013 community health monitor survey results during a public forum of community leaders. NLM Seeks Input on the Future of the NN/LM: Responses Due by June 26!

The National Library of Medicine has issued Request for Information (RFI) NIHLM2014157, to seek input from a wide variety of current and potential user communities, including health sciences and public libraries, health professionals, public health workers, community organizations, the general public, and other interested individuals and entities, for recommendations on how the National Network of Libraries of Medicine (NN/LM) can maximize its effectiveness and efficiency in providing all U.S. health professionals with equal access to biomedical information and improving the public’s access to health information. Announcing the 2014-15 NN/LM PSR Express Outreach Awards!

Four outstanding projects were funded in response to the 2014-15 Request for Proposals: Express Outreach/Training/Technology Awards. These projects will be funded for $9,000 each, for a period of 12 months, beginning May 1, 2014. The projects strive to improve access to health information for health professionals and health consumers, and to promote the awareness and use of products and services available from the NLM and the NN/LM.
