Kay E. Wellik, MLS, AHIP, FMLA is retiring in October. Kay started the medical library at St. Luke’s Hospital and Medical Center in Phoenix, and was manager of the Health Sciences Library at St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center in Phoenix for ten years. For the last 16 years she has been Director of Libraries for the Mayo Clinic in Arizona and is an Assistant Professor, Medical Informatics, in the College of Medicine, Mayo Clinic. Kay served on the Medical Library Association’s Board of Directors and has been active in many Sections.
The new Central Library of San Diego Public Library will celebrate its Grand Opening on Saturday, September 28, 2013.
Cynthia Johnson, M.S., began her appointment on July 29, 2013, as the new Medical Librarian at Natividad Medical Center in Salinas, CA. Cynthia previously held the position of Director at Rowayton Library in Connecticut. She is thrilled to serve the Salinas medical community.
Karin Saric began her appointment as Information Specialist at USC Norris Medical Library on July 8, 2013. She replaces Pamela Corley, who retired earlier this year.
The July 2013 issue of the Journal of the Medical Library Association includes an obituary for Ysabel Bertolucci.
Christine Ku Scott-Smith, Director of University of Guam’s Robert F. Kennedy Memorial Library, retired on June 28, 2013. Christine has relocated to Tallahassee, FL. Paul Drake, Assistant Professor, User Services and Document Delivery Librarian, will serve as the interim NN/LM liaison.
David Coleman is the new Librarian at Straub Clinic and Hospital in Honolulu, HI. He replaces Fran Smith, who retired in April 2013.
Ardis Weiss is the new Medical Librarian at Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center in Pomona, CA. She replaces Deborah Klein, who retired in January 2013. Ardis previously worked at Weber Memorial Medical Library at San Antonio Community Hospital.
Billie White, Clinical Librarian at St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center, published an article in the SGIM Forum (Society of General Internal Medicine) in May 2013. The article is entitled “Do You Have A Clinical Librarian On Your Team?”
Jackie Davis received the 2013 Consumer Health Librarian of the Year Award, sponsored by the Medical Library Association’s Consumer and Patient Health Information Section (CAPHIS). Jackie is a consumer health librarian at the Community Health Library, Elliott and Helen Cushman Wellness Center, Sharp Memorial Outpatient Pavilion, Sharp HealthCare, in San Diego, CA. Jackie has many achievements in the field of consumer health librarianship. She is a member of Sharp Healthcare’s Patient Education Council, Integrative Medicine Committee, and Patient Education Team. She participated in the Community Health Improvement Partners’ Health Literacy Task Force and developed a Health Information Ambassador program for Sharp HealthCare. As an active member of CAPHIS, she created two webliographies for the CAPHIS website and has written many book reviews for the CAPHIS newsletter.
Lori Tagawa, NN/LM PSR Community Outreach Coordinator, has achieved Advanced Level certification in MLA’s Disaster Information Specialization Program.
Michael Kronenfeld, Director at A.T. STill Memorial Library in Mesa, AZ, and others, authored the article “Survey of user preferences from a comparative trial of UpToDate and ClinicalKey,” which appears in the April 2013 issue of the Journal of the Medical Library Association.
